William 'Bill' F. Brendel
January 23, 1921 - December 3, 2006

WILLIAM BRENDEL MUSCATINE, Iowa - William Franklin 'Bill' Brendel, 85, died Sunday, December 3, 2006, at Unity Hospital. Funeral Service will be 10 a.m. Friday, December 8, 2006, at the Ralph J. Wittich-Riley-Freers Funeral Home. Reverend Richard Sebeniecher of the New Hope United Methodist Church will officiate the service. Burial will be in Memorial Park Cemetery with military rites provided by the combined squads of the American Legion Post 27 and the V.F.W. Post 1565. Visitation will be from 3:30 to 7 p.m. Thursday, December 7, 2006, at the funeral home with a Moose Service at 7 p.m. at the funeral home. Memorials may be made to the William Brendel Scholarship Fund for law enforcement education. 'Bill' was born on January 23, 1921, in Quincy, Illinois, the son of Theodore and Olive Vetter Brendel. He married Dorothy J. Johnson on March 11, 1939, in Muscatine. She preceded him in death in 2004. He was a veteran of World War II, serving in the Army as a Military Policeman. After returning from the service, he worked for the railroad in the Chicago area. He returned to Muscatine and worked for Roach and Musser Lumber Company and later became a Muscatine police officer, where he served for 24 years, retiring in 1977. He also served as interim police chief for the Muscatine Police Department. After his retirement he worked as a security guard for Grain Processing Company for several years. He was a member of New Hope United Methodist Church, Iowa State Police Association, Moose Lodge No. 388, and the American Legion Post 27. Bill loved camping, traveling and woodworking. Survivors include one daughter, Diana Oldfield and husband, Charles, of Fruitland; eight grandchildren, Chase Oldfield, Cale Oldfield, Clint Oldfield, Carin Truong, Bill Brendel, Joan Brendel, Jenny Brendel, and Adam Everett; 17 great-grandchildren, Colton, Carter, Cadee, Clare, Caleb, Joshua, Lydia, Mallarie and Daylan Oldfield, Aiden Truong, Lauren and Jake Brendel, Danie Eggers, Richie and Madi Dilts, and Luke and Haley Everett; one daughter-in-law, Terry L. Brendel of Muscatine; one sister, Ida Brendel Reffett of San Bernadino, California; and a dear friend, Lydia Lacy of Muscatine. He was preceded in death by his parent, his wife, one son, Wayne Brendel in 2005; his step-father, Robert Vetter, and a brother-in-law, Shannon Reffett.
