Gary Young
Canton -Gary Young, 74, passed away on Saturday, May 29, 2021 at his residence.
He was born on October 23, 1946 in Canton to Willis V. "Buck" and Clydell "Suzie" (Robertson) Young.
He married Sandra J. Downard on November 21, 1970.
Gary was a 1965 graduate of Canton Sr High School. He later attended 2 years at Canton Community College. He graduated from Aberdeen Proving Grounds, U.S. Army Training Center and School, University of Baltimore Extension School in Maryland. He was a machinist, 1st class, E-5, light mechanic and section chief with the U.S. Army in Southeast Asia and Germany.
He graduated with scholastic Achievement Award, Dean's List and numerous honors and associates degree in machine and tool design and machine, mechanical, architectural engineering drawing-Western Illinois University Extenstion Certificate.
He was a machine operator/assembler at Canton's International Harvester for 12 years. He was a sub-contractor, operated a lawn care service, handyman and security officer. He and his wife owned and operated "Sandy's Nifty 50s" restaurant in Canton. He went on to work 3 years at Indianapolis' Navistar Engine Plant.
He was a Charter member of the Canton Optimist Club and served on the board of directors and served as Vice President. He served on the board at East Side Church of the Nazarene and in various Sunday School positions.
Gary is survived by two sons, Willis E. (Natalie) Young of Peoria, Bradly D. Young of Canton, one daughter, Jennifer T. Young-Gould of Pukerua Bay, New Zealand and seven grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents and one brother, James Young.
Cremation rites have been accorded and there will be a graveside memorial service on Saturday. June 26, 2021 at 11 am at White Chapel Memory Gardens in Canton
Memorials may be made to the Eastside Church of the Nazarene.
Oaks-Hines Funeral Home and Crematory in Canton are in charge of arrangements.
