Michael McDermott
May 3, 1943 - June 7, 2021
Michael Edward McDermott passed away June 7, 2021 at the age of 78. Born on Lane Street in Detroit, Michigan, May 3, 1943, Michael was the youngest of four children to the late Edward P. and Helen (Kerezi) McDermott.
He served honorably in the U.S. Army as a Private First Class in Battery C, 2d Howitzer Battallion, of the 78th Artillary and had earned the revered status as a Sharpshooter (Rifle M-1).
Michael loved his mother and family, the city of Detroit and his country. He was raised in Southwest Detroit and attended Most Holy Redeemer.
For the past 76 years, he lived in the family home on Rogers Street, affectionately referred to as Mike's Mansion. He was a good neighbor to his neighbors and they to him.
A few cold Budweisers and a fresh pack of Pall Malls in his front pocket made for a nice afternoon on the front porch. On occasion, Mike would even entertain a little smoke he kept stashed in a mason jar in grandma's china cabinet "just in case of an emergency because you never know what's going to happen in life," he would say.
He had a great sense of humor and a ready laugh. A few years ago when introduced to a "nice Irish boy," Mike shook the young man's hand and said, "So which is it, are you nice or Irish?"
He enjoyed fishing, boating and spending time in northern Michigan where he would ride around for hours looking at properties and houses for sale.
A lover of music, particularly Boogie Woogie and 60's Rock, Mike had recently established a love-hate relationship with Amazon's Alexa who, as we know, does not answer to just anything.
He will be deeply missed by all.
Michael was preceded in death by his older brother Robert (Martha) Alexander, and sisters Geraldine (Hugh) Hurlahe and Margaret (Wilfred) Atkinson. He was the dear uncle to 15 nieces and nephews: Rickey McCarthy, Dawn Barnabo, Michael P. McCarthy, Ronald McCarthy, the late James McCarthy, Christine Hansen, Barbara Knapp, Laura Atkinson, Deborah Timmons, Lisa Waterman, Donna Reniff, the late Charles Alexander, Helen Rieske, Robert Alexander and Timothy Alexander. He is also survived by many great nieces and nephews.
