Loretta M. Wheelock, 94, of Zearing, Iowa passed away on Wednesday, June 23, 2021 surrounded by her loving family at the Zearing Health Care Center in Zearing, Iowa. A visitation will be held on Sunday, June 27, 2021 from 2:00 - 4:00 p.m. at Fredregill Funeral & Cremation Care in Zearing. A mass of Christian burial will be held on Monday, June 28, 2021 at 10:00 a.m. at St. Gabriel's Catholic Church in Zearing. Burial will follow at the Lincoln Township Cemetery in Zearing and a luncheon will be held at Dakins Community Center following her committal service.
Loretta was born on June 2, 1927 in Toledo, Iowa to Charles and Elsie (Tagatoff) Howard. She grew up by St. Anthony and attended school in Zearing. She graduated from Zearing High School with the class of 1944. She married the love of her life Paul Wheelock on July 29, 1946 and the couple resided in Zearing where they raised their family. Loretta began working at NESCO in 1970 as a "lunch lady" and retired from Colo-NESCO in 1997. Loretta was a member of St. Gabriel's Catholic Church, and the Zearing American Legion Auxiliary. Loretta's life revolved around her family, children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, siblings, nieces and nephews and their events was her life. She will be greatly missed by them all.
Those left to cherish her loving memories are her children Pauletta Richards of Marshalltown, IA, Bob (Marcy) Wheelock of Zearing, IA, Denny Wheelock of Zearing, Iowa, and Becky (Ed) Burr of Topeka, KS; 11 grandchildren; 20 great-grandchildren; and 4 great-grandchildren.
Loretta was proceeded in death by her parents, and husband Paul.

"Going back in time to approximately 1967 when I was in in 2nd grade about 7 years old. My brother got very sick requiring hospitalization and my parents full attention. My father Francis Howard and Loretta (who were brother and sister) agreed that I could live with the Wheelock family for a while. At this time they resided on a farm north of Zearing a few miles. During my stay, Loretta took good care of me. She cooked lots of good food, made sure I got ready for school in time and got on the bus, provided everything a kid needs on a daily basis. She treated me just like I was one of her own children. I felt very welcome and cared for in her family. Time goes by slower when young, but from memory, I stayed with the Wheelock?s for several weeks. It was also good to get to know my cousins better. Just hanging out with kids that were a few years older than me seemed real fun. There were lots of things to do on the farm. Another memory, while attending school in Zearing and eating lunch. Loretta was always in the kitchen area. While passing thru the food line it was always nice to see a familiar face and usually say hello. As I grew older and over the years, when visiting with Loretta we had some interesting conversations about family history and things that happened in the past. It always seemed easy to discuss things with her. She passed on information that I otherwise would not have known. Moving forward to just a few years ago. Loretta asked my wife Barbara to have a Tea Party in Nevada at our Queen Ann Bed & Breakfast. She wanted to invite her friends to do something special. So Barbara prepared a very nice meal, deserts and of course an elegant setting for them. Loretta really enjoyed this activity very much. The last time we visited Loretta was at the Zearing Health Care Center, approximately about 18 months ago. Due to the covid epidemic it?s been pretty impossible to visit in person since then. Barbara & I had two of our grand daughters with us, Isabella and Scarlett, who got to meet Loretta and have a short visit. My Aunt Loretta was a caring, loving and generous person. She is going to missed and remembered in our hearts forever! Larry Howard, Nephew"
