Verania Cancel
March 4, 1932 - June 25, 2021

Verania Cancel, 89, of Rochester, formerly of New York, went home to her Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, surrounded by her adoring family on Friday, June 25, 2021 at her home.

Verania was born March 4, 1932 in Lares, Puerto Rico, to Benito and Sofia (Hernandez-Vargas) Gonzalez. On June 27, 1952, Verania was united in marriage to Louis Cancel. Verania was well known for her amazing cooking skills and was an accomplished seamstress. Over the years, she made many dresses for her daughters including bridesmaid and prom dresses. She was very active with her church and a member of John 3:16 in the Bronx and later at Faith Assembly of God in Poughkeepsie, NY. Verania and Louis moved back to Puerto Rico in 1997 after Louis retired, where she became active at her new church, Iglesia de Dios MB "Jehovah Shammah" in Manati, PR. She had a quiet strength, mild manners and a humble heart. Verania was a godly woman who showed great patience and led by example. She touched and influenced many people over the years. Her love for God was immense, she was prayerful and a faithful servant. Above all, Verania was a loving wife, mother and grandmother. She was devoted to her God, family and church family.

Verania is survived by her loving husband of 69 years, Louis Cancel; children, Wanda Cancel, Nilda Cancel, Louis (Marie) Cancel and Frances (Aundrae) Reynolds; twenty grandchildren, Hector Camacho, Kenneth Camacho, Keith Camacho, Richard Camacho, Cherisse Camacho, Danny Cruz, Ivelisse Dickens, Jared Dickens, Jeremy Dickens, Amy Perez, Darlene Castro, Dennis Rivera, Diane Rivera, Nilda Rivera, Alycia Cancel, Emilio Cancel, Alexis Dandrade-Cancel, Nigel Reynolds, Rhema Reynolds and Shilo Reynolds; 41 great-grandchildren; 11 great, great-grandchildren; siblings, Benito Gonzalez, Wilfredo Gonzalez, Ketty Gonzalez, Dalila Gonzalez; numerous nieces, nephews and a host of other family and friends. Verania was preceded in death by her son, James and sisters, Miriam Cancel and Nilda Mangual.

"When my family moved to the Bronx in 1966 , Luis and Verania were one of the first families to welcome us to the US and the church. They became my parents best friends and also became par of our family , us as kid would love to go to their house not only to play with our new friens but with our new family. She was such a good cook . I would eat anything she put in front of me .our family has a history . I have?nt seen all of you for a long time but my heart hurts like if I saw her yesterday.
