In loving memory of

Dennis Joel Major
October 16, 1938 - July 13, 2021

Major, Mr.
Dennis Joel
Muskegon

Dennis Joel Major of Norton Shores was born October 16, 1938,in Buffalo, NY, the son of Joseph S. and Doris (Schafer) Major. He grew up in Painesville, OH, graduating from Riverside High School where he lettered in three sports and was the quarterback of the high school football team. His athletic involvement continued at Kent State University, where he was the catcher on the varsity baseball team.

After graduation in 1960, he married Marla Webster on August 6, and began his career in marketing and sales at several steel and aluminum companies. When he accepted a position in Muskegon at Lorin Industries in 1991, Dennis moved his family for the sixth and last time. He retired from Lorin in 2003.

With each move, he found a new church home and became an active member of the congregation. In Munster, IN, he sang in the choir and a quartet. In Flossmoor, IL, he chaperoned teens on canoe trips in the Boundary Waters. Here at First Congregational in Muskegon, he enjoyed serving as the "Egg Man" at Saturday Breakfasts.

With each move, there was always a new home to build or renovate. He was meticulous in each task he undertook, whether home improvement, woodworking, or designing and crafting silver jewelry. Gifts to family members became prized possessions.

Prior to his stroke in 2013, Dennis was an avid golfer and member of White Lake Golf Club. His sailboat "Windsor" was kept across the street at White Lake Yacht Club. He shared his love of golf and boating with his family.

Dennis leaves his wife of 61 years, Marla Major, his daughters Elisabeth Major of Muskegon, Melissa (Doug Scott) Major of Aiken, SC, and son Joel (Debra) Major of Okemos. Grandchildren Haley, Andrew, Chad, Anne, and Gillian. Great-grandchildren Graham and Teagan.

The family would like to acknowledge the excellent care Dennis received at the end of his life from Harbor Hospice and Poppen Residence, and through the years at home from loyal caregivers, Paula Nehra, Kathy Recht, Sandy Barnhart, and Linda Norden.
