Charles William Lawhead MESA, Arizona - Charles William Lawhead, died March 13, 2008, in Mesa, Arinona. A memorial service was held at Velda Rose United Methodist Church in Mesa. Graveside services with military rites by the American Legion were held at Rose Hill Cemetery in Mount Ayr, Iowa. Mr. Lawhead was born July 13, 1920. He married Florence Olive Abarr on December 29, 1941. He graduated from Mount Ayr High School in 1938. He received his bachelor of science and D.D.S. degrees in 1943 from the University of Iowa. After his graduation from dental school, he entered the U.S. Army Dental Corp during World War II, retiring with a rank of captain. In 1946 he began his dental profession in Mount Ayr continuing until 1984. He was active in the First Christian Church in Mount Ayr, the Iowa United Methodist Church in Ellston, Iowa. He was a member of the Masonic order, Shrine, and Order of Eastern Star, American Legion, the Mount Ayr Golf and Country Club and the Mount Ayr Lion's Club. He was a member of the Iowa State Dental Society, the American Dental Association and the University of Iowa President's Club and Foundation. He announced sporting events at Mount Ayr High School for many years. Music was always a foremost part of his life. After moving to Mesa, he joined the Velda Rose United Methodist Church and became a choir member. While at the University of Iowa, he played trombone in the marching band and sang in the men's chorus. Survivors include his wife, Florence of Mesa, Arizona; his daughter, Camille Jackson and husband, Richard, of Kellerton, Iowa; two sons, Dr. Collus Lawhead and wife, Jane, of Mount Ayr, Iowa, and Dr. Carlin Lawhead and wife, Vicki, of Muscatine, Iowa; grandchildren, Racinda Jackson Godbold and husband, Dave, of Windsor, Colorado, Randall Jackson and wife, Theresa, of Des Moines, Iowa, Dr. Lauran Lawhead Hoffman and husband, Dave, of Missouri Valley, Iowa, Dr. David Lawhead and wife, Paula of Lauderdale, Minnesota, and Christopher and Connor Lawhead of Muscatine, Iowa; great-grandchildren are Ashton Hoffman, Nicholas and Eleanor Jackson and Cyan Godbold.
