In loving memory of

Daniel John Sweeney
December 1, 1930 - June 26, 2021

Daniel John Sweeney (Dan) was born and baptized Catholic in Bronx, New York, 90 years ago, died at Sarasota Memorial Hospital Florida June 26, 2021. He graduated from Fordham University School of Business in 1952. He served as a US Army Lieutenant in Korea. He graduated from Harvard Law School in 1957, and married Jane Sweeney née Gallant in that year. Dan adored Jane and was mesmerized by her grace and beauty for 64 years. Survived by four daughters Patricia Sweeney, Carol Sweeney, Laura Terdoest, and Erin Sweeney; one granddaughter Nicole Terdoest; and his sister Patricia Sheehy. His sister Joan Sweeney O’Connor predeceased him in 2017. Dan was a superlawyer before there was a word for it; was admitted to the US Supreme Court bar and argued a US Supreme Court case; was also admitted to the bar in several states and litigated cases in those states. Dan always went the extra mile for friends and family; loved entertaining, inviting guests to join him at incredible destinations, wining and dining them, and making sure that a good time was had by all. Dan was a self-taught piano player, enjoying tunes such as The Girl from Ipanema and Guantamera. He traveled the world with Jane, sailed the Chesapeake Bay, played tennis and golf, admired beautiful women, exotic sports cars, as well as Humphrey Bogart, Dean Martin, and James Bond. Erin Sweeney and her cousin Sharon O’Connor remember a fun ride in the 1980s for ice cream cones in a Ferrari Dino, blasting the Saturday Night Fever sound track. A memorial is planned on Cape Cod, where the Sweeneys summered for 64 years, and then a formal interment ceremony at Sarasota National Cemetery later this year. Dan supported Southeastern Guide Dogs, 4210 77th Street East, Palmetto, FL, 34221, so he would appreciate support for this non-profit.
