Ruth Sloan NEW BOSTON, Illinois - Ruth Ann Sloan, 71, New Boston, died Sunday, May 3, 2009, at Mercer County Nursing Home, Aledo, Illinois. Funeral Service will be 12:00 p.m. on Thursday, May 7, 2009, at the New Boston United Methodist Church. Reverend Richard Bishop will officiate. Organist will be Rose Tary. Honorary bearers will be Wallace Wally Green, Kenny Brokel, Bill Willits, Forrest Frosty Green, Steve Willits, George Sloan. Casket bearers will be Travis Smith, Cody Smith, Eli Sloan, Bobby Woodsmall, Jeff Smith and Doug Slagel. Burial will be at New Boston Cemetery. Visitation will be from 9 a.m. until service time on Thursday, May 7, 2009, at the church. Memorials may be made to New Boston United Methodist Church or New Boston Volunteer Fire and Ambulance. Denison Funeral Home, Aledo, is in charge of arrangements. Ruth was born July 16, 1937, in Moline, Illinois, the daughter of Ernest and Anna Ruth McCauley Carlson. She married E. Reed Sloan on June 5, 1955, in Aledo, Illinois. He preceded her in death in December of 1986. She was a farm wife and ran Ruthies Market in New Boston for most of her married life. She worked several years for Mercer County Home Health Care. Her very close friends and family knew her by a special knickname, Tickles. She always was looking to give a helping hand to the down and out. She was a member of the New Boston United Methodist Church and was active in its women's group. She enjoyed bowling and being a member of the New Boston 500 Card Club. She is survived by a daughter, Rita Phillipson and husband, Mark, of Alexis, Illinois; three sons, Brian Sloan of Muscatine, Iowa, Murry Sloan of New Boston, Illinois, and Bret Sloan of Kewanee, Illinois; 10 grandchildren, Travis Smith, Cody Smith, Kenda Woodsmall and husband, Bobby, Eli Sloan, Kara Sloan, Tyler Sloan Howard, Taylor Sloan Howard, Shenea Sloan Sedam, Shannon Boynton and Hannah Lorah; five great-grandchildren, Nerrissa Prater Sloan, Lydia Malcom and Jay, Jasmine and Josie Woodsmall; two sisters, Jean Mahaffey of Aledo, Illinois, and Laurene Pinky Kuncar of Coral Gables, Florida; and a brother, Ernie Carlson of Covington, Georgia. She was preceded in death by her parents; a sister, Joan Sloan and a daughter, Kelly Sue Sloan.
