Bennie C. Harrington IOWA CITY, Iowa -Bennie C. Harrington of Legacy Pointe, formerly of Downey, died Sunday, October 4, 2009, at Mercy Hospital Hospice in Iowa City. Funeral Service will be 10:30 a.m. on Wednesday, October 7, 2009, at the Henderson-Barker Funeral Home in West Branch. Burial will be at the Downey Cemetery. Visitation will be from 4 to 7 p.m. on Tuesday, October 6, 2009, at the funeral home. Memorials may be made to Downey Baptist Church or Iowa City Hospice. Bennie was born on September 26, 1913, in Bowmantown, Tennessee, the daughter of John E. and Mary Austin Ball. She attended rural Johnson County schools. On February 16, 1939, she was united in marriage to Claude Harrington in Kahoka, Missouri. For 20 years he was employed with the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics, retiring in 1980. She was a member of the Downey Baptist Church. She was an avid Chicago Cubs fan, treasured the time spent with her great- grandchildren, was a quilter, spent much time reading and enjoyed the outdoors; planting and tending to her large garden, flowers, and watching the birds. Survivors include two daughters; Dixie L. Walker and husband, Wayne, of Iowa City and Mary Sue Bickford and husband, Robert, of West Branch; a grandson, Steve (Joey) Young of Iowa City; three great-grandchildren, Ryan, Jamie and Luke; two sisters, Josephine Fulton of Iowa City and Dorothy Justice of Fort Worth, Texas; and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Claude; daughter, Billie Jan Harrington; son-in-law, Robert Young, and seven sisters, Anna Krueger, Myrtle Parizek, Louise Bulechek, Cleo Krueger, Lucy Krueger, Pearl Davis and Stella Mahoney.
