"One of my favorite memories from teenage years is Nyla sawing quilt while I play the piano which Nyla and her husband Davie got for me for my 16th birthday. Nyla loved her children and grandchildren.
It has been a year since her death. I still cannot believe that she is gone.
You have my deepest sympathy to all who loved her foods, lovely cats and a dog, her beautiful arts of quilting and her great smile and warm heart which were contagious. She had the most wonderful family."

"I want to express my many thoughts and prayers for Nyla's family. She was a wonderful woman who gave of herself to who ever needed her. I met Nyla at a quilting class at her home in January of 2004. This class was a Christmas present to me from my family. The class was wonderful and I learned alot. Nyla taught us to go with the flow of the quilt. I started off knowing only how to do basic sewing and walked away from this class with a good understanding of quilting.
Nyla showed us during class some of her quilts and we came to understand that you could have at least 5 or 6 different projects going at the same time. At that time I thought that that would not be possible. Now I understand because at this time I do have 5 projects waiting to be finished.
There were many times that I would go see, call, and or email Nyla for advise on a quilt. She was always there to help with what ever needed to be done.
I did not know Nyla for a long as many but I will remember her till I join her someday.

Over the years we have given the women and children that stayed at our shelter a quilt to take with them when they left. Nyla was such a big supporter of or program and the clients that we serve. She will be greatly missed.

"To my family... We all know how wonderful Grandma Nyla was and she will be forever missed. Words cannot express the feeling of loss that we are all experiencing right now, I know. Together we will get through this. Thank you, entire family, for being supportive to everyone in the family and for finding ways to comfort each other, even when yourselves are feeling down. We have laughed and cried over memories of Grandma, and those memories are what we will forever hold onto. Thank you, Grandpa Dave, for being such a strong and loving Grandpa, Father, and Husband. We love you very much and are all here for you. You and Grandma have been so good to everyone in the family and you should know how much it is appreciated.
It is going to be hard to go on without Grandma, but we know she is now at peace. I want you all to know that I love each of you very much and am thankful to have such a great family. You can call me anytime!!!
Love You All,
Melissa"

"my thoughts are with all of you...husband, mother, children, and grandchildren.
I have felt blest to have known Nyla as a sophomore in high school - always having a keen sense of humor, enjoying every person (and somehow we reconnected when I was a lay volunteer with the Franciscans and Jesuits in Zambia...and I looked forward to getting her emails.
Last fall when I was in Iowa for two weeks, we were able to catch up - and she so enjoyed her family.
Of course, we were both Hillary Clinton fans (I am a lifelong Democrat but Nyla was a recent "political" activist.
Hope to meet you, David, when I get to Iowa next fall and to hear about her last months.
Am counting on Nyla to be on the welcoming committee when my own life journey ends/begins.
With care,
Mary Furlong"

"Nyla touched more lives through her love of quilt making then any of us will ever begin to know. I had the pleasure of meeting her over the history of her home where upon I learned about her love and extraodinary talent in creating quilts. We connected every so many years, always amazed me the memory she had. I regret I let time slip by missing out on the opportunity sharing our common love as she was an awesome patient teacher, which appeared to me to be a hidden talent she was blessed with.
There be no words that can ease the pain and sorrow her family and closest friends are experiencing now. But if we all share our stories and show off her quilts, she will always be with us in spirit. I'm sure she is already putting a class together in our heavenly fathers kingdom. My sincerest condolences."
