Ethel P. Wohlhagen
August 18, 1928 - October 9, 2021

Mrs. Ethel P. Wohlhagen, died peacefully on Saturday, October 9, 2021 at Spring House Estates in Lower Gwynedd, PA. She was 93 years old.

Born and raised in Philadelphia, she was the daughter of the late Michael and Alice (nee Mercer) Phelan. She was a 1946 graduate of Germantown High School and attended the University of Delaware as an Art History Major. She and her husband William spent the first few years of married life in Haddonfield, NJ, until settling in Wilmington, DE. In 2005, they retired to Spring House Estates in Lower Gwynedd, PA.

Ethel was a Senior Secretary for many years, employed by E.I. DuPont until her retirement in 1983. An avid gardener, she was a member of the Canterbury Garden Club, the Delaware Federation of Garden Clubs, and the Delaware Valley Daffodil Society. After retirement, she worked at Winterthur Museum, Gardens and Library where she was a garden guide and docent for 10 years.

Ethel was a tireless volunteer throughout her life. When the children were young, she was active in the PTA, the Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts. She volunteered for children's programs in Wilmington, served on the Public Affairs Committee at the Mary Campbell Center for disabled young adults, and was a fundraiser for the Polio and Diabetes Associations. She was a faithful parishioner at St. Mary Magdalen Church in Wilmington, DE and St. Alphonsus Church in Maple Glen, PA.

Ethel enjoyed her retirement years at Spring House Estates, where she participated in many groups, including the Spring House Chorus.

Ethel was preceded in death by her beloved husband of 61 years, William J. Wohlhagen, in 2010. She is the devoted mother of William M. Wohlhagen and his wife Marie, of Wilmington, DE; and Laura W. O'Connor and her husband Robert, of Ambler, PA. Her son, the late Robert J. Wohlhagen, passed away in 2020. She is the loving grandmother of 7 and great-grandmother of 5. She is survived by her dear sister Alice P. Schindler, and her friend and companion William Gleason.

Relatives and friends are invited to call on Thursday, October 14, 2021 from 10:00 to 11:00 AM at St. Alphonsus Church, 33 Conwell Drive, Maple Glen, PA 19002. The Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 11:00 AM by Rev. Msgr. Brian P. Hennessy.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in Ethel's name to Winterthur Museum, Gardens and Library, 5105 Kennett Pike, Winterthur, DE 19735.
