Dr. William J. Wingel
April 18, 1932 - October 19, 2021

Dr. William Joseph Wingel passed away peacefully on the evening of October 19, 2021 at the Reserve at Towne Lake in Woodstock, GA. He was 89 years old and a former resident of Southampton, PA.

Bill was born in Philadelphia on April 18, 1932 and was one of two children of the late Nicholas and Julia (Hornyak) Wingel.

Dr. Wingel was a graduate of Roman Catholic High School, where he received a full scholarship to college, and years later, was inducted into the Sports Hall of Fame. Bill is an alumnus of LaSalle University. While a student, he served as Editor of the school newspaper and President of the Student Council. Following college, Bill served as an Army officer in the Korean War.

Dr. Wingel received a Doctor of Education from Nova University. He was the youngest person to pass the Principal's examination and became the Principal of Clara Barton Elementary School in Philadelphia for most of his career.

Bill was a talented musician and played the accordion and trombone in a jazz band. He was blessed with a good singing voice and sang in a barbershop quartet in college. Bill also enjoyed playing tennis, square dancing, and organic gardening.

Bill was a faithful parishioner at Our Lady of Good Counsel Church in Southampton, actively involved in various ministries. He served as a Lector and Eucharistic Minister, participated with the RCIA program and Pre CANA training, assisting the bereaved with planning funeral liturgies, and sang with the guitar group. He was also a Men of Malvern retreatant.

Bill was a humble man who gave of his time and talents to help others. He maintained his wonderful sense of humor until the end of his life and always kept his nurses laughing.

Bill was preceded in death by his beloved wife Gloria (nee Poli) in 2015 and his dear daughter Marie Ann Wingel in 1964. He is survived by his devoted sons, Dr. Mark W. Wingel, DO and his wife Deborah, of Hockessin, DE and Robert W. Wingel and his wife Ruth, of Woodstock, GA. He is the loving grandfather of Kelsey, Serena, Deanna, Carina and Raquel. Bill is also survived by his sister Ruth W. Doyle of Doylestown, PA.

Relatives and friends are invited to call on Tuesday, November 2, 2021 from 10:00 to 10:45 AM at Our Lady of Good Counsel Church, 611 Knowles Ave. Southampton, PA 18966. Words of Remembrance will begin at 10:45 AM followed by Bill's Funeral Mass at 11:00 AM, with the Rev. Robert G. Suskey, Pastor as Celebrant. Interment will be in Resurrection Cemetery, Bensalem.
