Born March 11, 1939, in Cincinnati, Iowa, Larry Lyle Hiatt was the son of Paul and Wilma Jean (Moats) Hiatt. He moved with his family as a child to Ames where he grew up and received his education, then served in the United States Navy from 1956-1960.

Following his military service, Larry returned to Iowa and over the years was employed at Brownie's Sinclair Station in Ames, as a printer at Graphic Forms in Nevada, for the Highway Commission, and as manager of Meek & Briggs Printing in Des Moines. After retiring in the late 1990's, Larry went back to work as a greeter and courier at McFarland Clinic in Ames for the next 17 years.

He was married to Shirley Myers in Princeton, Missouri, on June 25, 1965.

Larry will be fondly remembered for his love of people and his great sense of humor. He had a joke and a smile for everyone. Family meant everything to him, and he had a special place in his heart for his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Larry was an avid golfer, a wonderful dancer, and delighted in the many road trips he and Shirley made throughout the nation. He was a member of the United Methodist Church in Nevada, the Ames American Legion, and in earlier years served as a volunteer firefighter in Nevada.

Larry is survived by his wife of 56 years, Shirley; three children, Douglas Hiatt of Des Moines, Diana Stensland of Nevada, and Lori Pfantz of Nevada; 11 grandchildren; 23 great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandson; as well as nieces, nephews, cousins, and other extended family members.

He was preceded in death by his parents; a son, Donald Desher; a grandson, Raymond Desher; three brothers, Paul Hiatt, Roger Hiatt, and Dean Hiatt; and a sister, Doris Smith.

Ames Monument & Cremation Center has been entrusted with the care of Larry and his family.
