In loving memory of

Roger Lee Grier
May 22, 1948 - January 3, 2022

On Monday, January 3, 2022, a caring husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, brother, and friend, Roger Lee Grier of Monroe passed away at age 73 at Mercy Medical Center in Des Moines.

The son of Jack Charles and Carolyn Jean (Rauch) Grier, Roger was born on May 22, 1948, in Grinnell, Iowa. He graduated from BGM High School in 1966. Roger, the oldest of 12 children, grew up on a farm outside of Deep River and Guernsey, Iowa.

Growing up in a large family, there was never a dull moment in the Grier household. Many stories were shared every Christmas Eve gathering, a timeless tradition that is upheld each year. 'Big' fish stories from the annual fishing trips with his brothers was always a topic to be reminisced.

Roger was a loyal Iowa Hawkeye fan and enjoyed attending games with his wife, sons, and friends. He loved to spend time in his garden and share the fruits of his labor. He never met a stranger and had a tale for every occasion. Roger was a jack-of-all-trades, from ambulance driver to barber. He spent a lifetime driving over the road as a truck driver and collecting stories from every corner of the country. For many years, he enjoyed operating his local business, Grier Sales and Service, deepening his roots in the community.

His porch was a gathering place for many in Monroe where he was ever-the-host. When it was too cold for porch sitting, he and his close friends took their adventures to their beloved retirement spot in Arizona. Roger's greatest joys were his family and friends whom he loved unconditionally. He was very proud of his family, especially his sons, Jeremy and Curtis, for their service in the US Army.

Those who knew Roger will remember his laugh and will carry his captivating stories close to their hearts.

Those left to honor his memory include his wife, Julie; daughter, Jennifer Dyson (John); sons, Jeremy Grier, and Curtis Grier (Angee); stepson, Bob Waskow (Tricia); stepdaughter, Julie Palm (Shawn); stepson, Jared Baughman (Darcy) and stepdaughter, Johnna Baughman (Scott); 17 grandchildren; 3 great-grandchildren; brothers, Larry, Gary, Dennis, Tom, and Terry; sisters, Connie, Rhonda, Bonnie, Barbara, and Marcia.

Preceding Roger in death were his parents, Jack and Carolyn; former wife, Pauline; and sister, Donna.

A Hawkeye celebration of Roger's life will be held Saturday, February 12, 2022 at the American Legion in Monroe, Iowa from 11:00am-1:00pm. Memorials may be directed to Monroe Fire and Ambulance or the Monroe American Legion Post 363 and condolences may be left for the family at www.coburnfuneralhomes.com
