In loving memory of

Dr. Fred Harry Dunn
January 7, 1930 - March 7, 2022

Fred Harry Dunn, M.D., died peacefully at his home at the age of 92, on March 7, 2022. A Dallas native, Fred was the younger son of Philip and Mary Dunn. Fred graduated from Forest Avenue High School, playing on the varsity golf team his last two years. After his freshman year at SMU, Fred attended Texas A&M, where he was in the Chemical Corps and served as a Ross Volunteer his senior year. Fred attended medical school at the University Texas Medical Branch - Galveston, and subsequently did his internship at Parkland Hospital in Dallas, followed by a stint in the U.S. Army, where he served in Korea. Upon returning to Dallas, he met Naomi Hoppenstein, which he said was "the best thing that ever happened to me." They were married on July 3, 1960. After finishing his radiology residency at Michael Reese Hospital in Chicago, he came back home to Dallas, where he spent 38 years on staff at St. Paul Hospital and the Samuell Clinic and as a doctor at Diagnostic Radiology Associates of Dallas. A long-time member of the now-defunct Colombian Country Club, Fred enjoyed golfing with his friends at the club most Saturdays, and he enjoyed family trips, as well as cataloging the pictures in albums afterwards. After retiring in 2000, he traveled extensively with Naomi and volunteered as a docent at the Dallas Holocaust Museum.

Fred was a gentle, kind, uncomplicated man who always felt fortunate to have lived the wonderful life he made for himself and his family. Over the past several years, Fred's life was slowly but progressively limited by dementia. Fred is survived by his wife of 61 years, Naomi Hoppenstein Dunn, and four sons  Alvin Dunn (wife Lisa) of Washington, D.C., Mitchell Dunn (wife Jill) of Dallas, TX, Joel Dunn of Alpharetta, GA, and Brian Dunn (wife Rose) of Denver, CO  as well as nine grandchildren  Cory, Drew, Grant, Melissa, Scott, Avery, Maren, Harper and Wyatt. The family would like to thank the wonderful caregivers from Right at Home, including Chasteney, Tai, Maureen and Zee, for the attention and care they have provided to Fred for over three years.

A funeral service will be held at Congregation Shearith Israel, 9401 Douglas Ave, on Thursday, March 10 at 1:30 p.m., followed by the burial service at Shearith Israel Memorial Park, 4634 Dolphin Road. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Congregation Shearith Israel or The Jewish Family Service of Greater Dallas.
