In loving memory of

Morton Honig
March 4, 1934 - March 9, 2022

Morton ("Mort" or "Morty") Sidney Honig was born on May 4, 1934 in the Bronx, New York and passed away on March 9, 2022 in his home in Houston, Texas. His wife of 55 years and soulmate, Arleen, predeceased him in 2016. Mort is survived by his three children, Darcy, Caryn and Howard, his sons in law, Andy Simon and Scott Schepps, and his grandchildren, Samantha, Logan, Natasha and Juliana. He is also survived by his sisters, Harriet Schwartz (Ron) and Wilma Jacobowitz (Larry), his sister-in-law, Harriet Easton, many nieces and nephews, and his loving partner of three and a half years, Ronnie Forman.

Having been raised in a modest home, Mort never prioritized material wealth. His greatest joys came from his family, friends, and life experiences. He loved the great outdoors. Mort and Arleen's favorite escape was Aspen, Colorado, where they would hike, bike, listen to music and simply revel in nature's beauty. He loved traveling and safari in Africa was by far his and Arleen's favorite travel adventure. Mort loved sports and was a natural athlete, sneaking out of Hebrew school when he was young to play stickball for hours. Later in life his passion turned to tennis, where he easily excelled on the court without ever having any professional training. And most of all, Mort loved eating. Whether it was fine dining in a castle in France or the all-you-can-eat barbecue at the Swinging Door, he loved it all!

Mort was a gifted student who graduated from the Bronx High School of Science and then CCNY. His intellectual curiosity never waned, and in his later years he devoted himself to studying new topics and preparing for his Sunday "bagel" discussion group and men's discussion group luncheons. He took up bridge, water aerobics, and became an avid reader. Mort was a staunch advocate of democracy, followed politics closely and would welcome a "lively" discussion on the current state of affairs with any willing participant.

Mort had a long, happy and fulfilling life, surrounded by family and friends who loved him and will miss him dearly. Sadly, in the last couple of months he suffered from depression, likely caused by complications of Covid. In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to Jewish Family Services, Operation Mend which provides medical services and mental health support for veterans suffering from depression and PTSD, or any other crisis intervention program of your choice.

"It is with great sorrow that read of the passing of Mort. I have so very many fond memories of working, traveling, dining and adventures along the highway of work with Mort. He was an easy man to do these things with once you got to know him. I had a great deal of respect for his work ethics and the importance of his family. Mort always stressed to me that family was for life, and one must take care of this first. I regret we never got to have the tennis match between us. I'm sure there would have been a ton of laughter because I had no talent with the sport, but Mort thought he could convince me otherwise. Mort was such a good sport and generous man. If we had a "project" that the group worked on together; sponsoring families at Christmas, bar be que cookoffs, dance lessons in our lobby, etc. he jumped in with both feet! I was so lucky to have shared a part of my life with him and blessed that he was patient to teach me so many things about life and work. I put my hands together in prayer for his family and friends. Hugs and love and RIP, Mort. You will be missed. Judy Parker Setley"
