Keen Intellect, Resilient, Strong Opinions, Sparkling Blue Eyes and a Warm Smile
Born in Memphis, Tennessee, the oldest twin of parents Rose Schatz Friedman and Louis Friedman. Marvin is also predeceased by his beloved wife of 62 years, Elisabeth, brother William Earle, and stepmother Rebecca Lipson Friedman.
It took a village to raise "The Twins" as the family referred to Marvin and William Earle. They lost their mother young yet newlywed cousins Bailey & Louis, Aunt Edith and Uncle Marion, and Uncle Dave helped their father raise them. And cousins like siblings filled the void of this early loss.
The early years were spent on train rides each summer to Newport visiting The Nass family, baseball games in St. Louis with his father, Hebrew school after school, and stickball in the garden.
Then on to University of Tennessee in Knoxville, Columbia University for a Masters in business, The Army, and sales management at IBM in New York City. The bachelor years in New York City were memorable for the friends made and freedom to be his own person after leaving hometown Memphis and his twin brother. Worked hard; played hard skiing in Vermont, golfing, or traveling to Newport, RI to visit family and the beautiful beaches. It was a "blind date" with Elisabeth to
the Newport Jazz Festival, arranged by a cousin, that changed it all.
Wedding overlooking 1st beach in Newport and returning to New York City with his bride. Together they built a life devoted to family, "friends like family", and community wherever they called home ~ Tarrytown, California, and Dallas. He served on multiple boards including Temple Emanu-El and President of American Jewish Committee in Dallas. During his later years, he studied Talmud at Temple Emanu-El where he was never shy to share his knowledge.
In 1997 When Marvin learned that Liz had early onset Alzheimer's he transitioned lovingly from the "cared for" to the caretaker. Marvin will be remembered for his devotion to her care and enabling Liz to live comfortably with her disability for over 25 years.
Survived by children Roseanne (Richard Amoils), Norman (Stephanie), and Samuel G. (Angela) and grandchildren Robert, Alyssa, Morgan, Ella, and Veronica.
Donations in Marvin Daniel Friedman's memory may be made to the Elisabeth and Marvin Friedman Family Fund at Temple Emanu-El or a favorite charity.
