Hazel Mae Wright passed away peacefully on Wednesday, April 20, 2022, at the Story County Medical Center to joyfully reunite with her late husband James W. Wright Sr. and the Lord. Visitation will be held on Wednesday, April 27, 2022, at the United Methodist Church of Collins from 1:00 - 2:00 p.m. Immediately following her visitation her funeral service will begin at 2:00 p.m. with Reverend Nikki Ross Bishop officiating. Burial will follow in the Evergreen Cemetery in Collins, Iowa.
Born Hazel Mae Lage December 30, 1925, to John Augustus and Nell Ann Lage in Hubbard, Iowa. Hazel grew up in Hubbard with 4 older brothers whom all called her "Sister" and everyone in town eventually and still do call her "Sister". She grew up in a talented musical family and she excelled in music-chorus and playing the clarinet. In High School Hazel played 6 on 6 women's basketball and was Captain of her team during her Senior year. After High School she attended Evangelical Hospital in Marshalltown, Iowa and graduated as a Cadet Nurse during World War II. She worked at the hospital in various departments. Shortly after graduation she met James (Jim) at a local dance and was swept off her feet. They married December 4, 1948. They settled in and began farming in Collins. They created a family of 4 children. Hazel raised those children to be kind, be involved in music and sports as well. Hazel was a terrific cook, a good listener, and a friend to one and all. One of her greatest loves was golf. She even hit a "hole in one" and enjoyed playing golf into her '80's. She enjoyed dancing, square dancing, bridge, bingo and grew many flowers. Hazel always had a friendly smile and friendly way with everyone as she was involved in many community activities Collins Methodist Church, 4-H, Garden Club, American Legion, Story County Cowbells and Eastern Star. Hazel and Jim worked together in all things and enjoyed 73 years of marriage and many family gathering with relatives - especially Christmas and Easter.
She is survived by her children Rebecca Minnick (Wayne), Thomas James (Susan), James Wright Jr. (Sarah) and Janelle Mason (Rory). Missing her are grandchildren Joseph (Heidi) Wright of Kansas City, MO., Tracy Wright of Des Moines, Nathan and Christina Wright of Collins, IA, and Paul and Dylan Mason of Nevada, IA, nieces Jane Twedt of Roland, IA and Deborah Lage of Vacaville, CA.
Hazel was preceded in death by her parents, her late husband James Wright Sr., son William Robert Wright, grandson Jonathan Lee Wright and her four brothers Raleigh, Wilbur, Harold and Wayne.
Memorial contributions may be directed to the family so they can be distributed to Hazel's favorite local organizations.
Fredregill Funeral & Cremation Care has been entrusted with the care of Hazel and her family.
