In loving memory of

Inez Rachel "Rae" Silberman
March 1, 1928 - May 14, 2022

Dr. Rachel Mendelson Silberman passed away peacefully on May 14th, 2022 in Houston, Texas at the age of 94, after a brief illness. Although her loved ones are truly heartbroken by her loss, they are comforted by the memories and stories of her beautiful, rich, and fulfilling life.

Rae was born to Rose and Arnold Mendelson on March 1st, 1928 in Manchester, England, where she grew up during WWII. She matriculated at the end of the war, and then attended Manchester University Medical School on a merit scholarship. As one of only ten women in her medical school class, she attained her degree and specialized in pediatrics. It was through her work in London, where she met her future husband, Dr. Reuben Silberman, a South African surgeon. They married in New York in 1958, and moved together back to Johannesburg, where she practiced medicine and raised their four children. The family emigrated to Houston, Texas in 1979, where they have continued to live.

Remarkable Rae was loved and adored by all who had the honor of knowing her. Her passion for music was palpable; as an accomplished violinist and classical music aficionado, she instilled a deep love and appreciation for music within her children and grandchildren. It was always the best day for her when she got to attend a chamber music concert with friends or family. She loved telling stories of her life's journeys, indulging in sweets of any kind, and imparting her wisdom through experiences and expressions. Her distinctly British (Manchurian) accent, gentle and elegant demeanor, beautiful smile, and piercing blue eyes, made Rae unforgettable to anyone who met her, and an absolute gift to us all.

Most importantly, Rae was always there for her children, grandchildren, and friends. A loyal and devoted mother and grandmother, she always took care of her family with grace, respect, and love. Wherever the city, she never missed a game, recital, performance, ceremony, or event; she was everyone's #1 cheerleader, and it meant the world to us. She is survived by her loving family, including her children Karen (Lionel) Faitelson of Tucson, Arizona; Elaine Cohen, Gail (Ronny) Shoss, and Jon (Kristi) Silberman, all of Houston, Texas; and her grandchildren Danielle Faitelson, Ariella Faitelson (Valerie Gonzalez); Gregory Cohen, Elana Shoss, Elise Shoss, Madeline Silberman, and Reese Silberman.

A funeral service for Rae will be held on Monday afternoon, May 16, 2022 at 3:00 PM in the Bender Memorial Chapel at Beth Yeshurun Post Oak, 1037 Post Oak Rd. Houston, TX 77055 with a graveside service immediately following. For those wishing to view the funeral services please click the link: https://venue.streamspot.com/video/b6ee5b3ed2
