He was born to the late Virginia Nash (Fortner) on September 11, 1945, in Greenwood, Mississippi. He relocated to Twin Lake, Michigan at a young age where he attended Whitehall Public Schools. While at Whitehall John excelled in athletics and was an exceptional basketball player. John accepted Jesus Christ at an early age. He was an active member of Harvest Time Christian Church in Muskegon Heights, where he served under the leadership of Pastor James Starr.
After high school, John was drafted into the United States Army and fought in the Vietnam War. John went on to proudly serve his country for a total of 16 years before retiring. John enjoyed serving in his various organizations and being with his friends and family. He especially enjoyed spending time with his faithful wife of 13 years, Charmaine Christensen (Robinson) whom he lovingly called "Char". He also enjoyed going to the gym, listening to jazz, playing chess, and recently picked up the past times of fishing and playing golf. He enjoyed taking his family and friends out to eat and picking up the tab. His favorite store was the Lakeside Emporium because they sold all his favorite childhood snacks and candies.
