In loving memory of

Barbara Ann Monahan
December 1, 1927 - July 16, 2022

Barbara Ann Monahan (née Fettig), passed away peacefully on July 16th, at her home in Grosse Pointe Shores, MI.

Barbara was born on December 1, 1927, in Hazel Park, Michigan. The third of five children, her childhood during the Depression impressed upon her the importance of family and community.

In 1948, she married John F. Monahan (Jack) after he returned from WWII. Together, they lovingly raised seven children, and after her fourth child had graduated from college, Barbara determined to attend herself. She graduated from Wayne State University in 1978.

Barbara had a deep intellectual curiosity and would constantly surprise you with her knowledge. She was quiet, sensitive, and perceptive; an avid reader and bridge player with a good sense of humor and a great devotion to her family and her faith. She went on to become a docent at the Detroit Institute of Arts, where for 25 years she shared her love for the art in their collection, especially the Diego Rivera Courtyard. She also had a great sense of adventure and the good fortune to travel with Jack through many parts of Europe, Asia, and Africa.

Barbara is survived by her children, Michael J. Monahan (Jackie), Barbara Monahan Barrett (Patrick), Patricia Monahan (Jay Newland), Mary Beth Monahan, John Monahan (Elaine Touscany), Tim Monahan (Laura) and was predeceased by her infant son, John Patrick Monahan and her daughter, Kathleen Tomaszycki (Carl).

She was the proud grandmother of 17 grandchildren and 18 great-grandchildren.

Services will be celebrated July 25th, at Our Lady Star of the Sea Catholic Church, 467 Fairford, Grosse Pointe Woods, MI (masks requested). Visitation at the church will be begin at 9:30am until the time of Mass at 10am

"My family and I are so sorry for your loss. I never knew your Mom finished her college degree. How wonderful! I saw Tim at a South Lacrosse game this Spring and he told me about Katie too. That's a lot of loss. Please take care of yourselves. Love, Paula Puleo"
