In loving memory of

Dorothy Joan Lopes
January 2, 1934 - August 3, 2022

Dorothy Joan Lopes, age 88, of Portsmouth, RI, passed away on August 3, 2022 at Newport Hospital surrounded by family. She was the wife of the late Michael E. Lopes.

Dorothy was born on January 2, 1934 in Norwich, CT to the late Russell and Victoria (Metivier) Carter. During her childhood, she learned many skills from her parents, including how to hunt, fish, garden, and landscape. Dorothy moved to RI in 1957 and spent the rest of her life in the Ocean State. In her younger years, she worked as a nursing assistant at Newport Hospital and volunteered as a Brownie Scout leader. Family came first, and Dorothy dedicated much of her life to helping her family and friends. She was known for providing childcare to children (and grandchildren!) of her loved ones, inspiring generations to care for others and learn practical skills. She was also a talented crafter and seamstress, who especially enjoyed crocheting and knitting. Dorothy's favorite holiday was Christmas. She hosted a Christmas Eve party for many years that will bring back many memories to family and friends. No project was too small or large for Dorothy, who worked side by side with her husband doing everything from cutting down trees to building a garage. She enjoyed life to the fullest and encouraged anyone she met to do the same.

Dorothy is survived by her children; Brenda Teckman of Haverhill, MA; Richard Blight and his wife Arlene of Middletown, her grandchildren, Victoria Teckman, Michael Teckman (Laura), Russell Clearo (partner Debra Sheehan), Richard Blight (Katherine), and Bridgette Blight (Damon Goodrich-Houska), and five great grandchildren.

Dorothy is preceded in death by her husband, a daughter Mary Victoria (Blight) Clearo Gray, and a brother Russell Carter.

Visiting hours will be held on Wednesday, August 10 from 11:00-1:00pm at the Memorial Funeral Home, 375 Broadway, Newport, RI, with a memorial service to follow at 1:00pm in the funeral home.

Memorial donations may be made to the Portsmouth Fire Department, 2300 East Main Road, Portsmouth, RI 02871 or to Visiting Nurse Home and Hospice, 1184 East Main Road, Portsmouth, RI 02871.

"Aunt Dot....you shall always be missed! Every Christmas we reminisce about your parties and for me it goes all the way back to Warner St. One of our last conversations was you said to me you claimed a part of my granddaughter Dottie's name and I told you yes you are a part of it as well as Mom being named Dorothy. When she is older she will know her name is a part of you and Mom.You left a lasting impression on me of what a strong woman is.You shall always be in my heart....
