In loving memory of

Edward Ronald Lane
August 25, 2022 - September 23, 2022

Edward "Ed" Ronald Joseph Lane, of Muskegon, MI, died of cancer Friday, 23 September 2022 at the Harbor Hospice Poppen House in Muskegon. He was 65 years old.

Ed was born on August 25, 1957 in Chicago, Illinois, the son of Ann-Marie and Ronald Lane. After a childhood marked by misadventure, Ed enlisted in the United States Army straight out of high school in 1976 and served his enlistment in Nuremberg, Germany as a Lance missile system crewmember. Shortly after his return to the US, Ed met Diane Haveman, of Rapid City, SD, and they married in Chicago in 1982. Their first child, Christine, was born that same year.

The next year, the Lanes moved to Racine, WI, where they had two more children: Derek, born in 1985, and Samantha, born in 1986. In 1988, the family moved again, back to Diane's hometown of Rapid City, where Ed worked for Computer Land and the Rapid City Journal before settling in at RESPEC Engineering as a computer programmer, a position he held until his retirement in 2021. His success at RESPEC later allowed him to bring Christine's husband Frank in under his wing as assistant and pupil, and the two worked closely together for many years. In 2019, Ed and Diane divorced, prompting him to leave South Dakota, at first temporarily to Florida, and then to Muskegon, to live with his partner, Colette Palazzola.

While at times irascible and temperamental, Ed was fiercely loyal to and protective of his family, whether they wanted him to be or not. He was generous with his money, willing to help family in need, tipping outrageously, and being a great patron of street musicians.

Ed Lane is survived by his sisters, Diane Denz, Linda Mager, and Debra Simmons; his children, Christine Bakkevik, Derek Lane, and Samantha Truelsen; his grandson, Audun Bakkevik; and his significant other. Collette Palazzola.
