Thomas Patrick Murray, Age 59, died November 10, 2022
On Thursday, November 10, 2022, in Clinton Township, Michigan, Thomas Patrick Murray was called home at the age of 59 after a four-year battle with ALS. He was a wonderful husband, father, brother, uncle, leader, and friend.
Tom was born in Detroit, Michigan, on March 9th, 1963, the youngest son in a family of six children - three boys and three girls. Growing up in Fraser, Tom was a clever kid with an impish grin and large, sparkling brown eyes. He began each day full of joy, excited to discover what life had in store for him. As an adult, Tom wasn't much different. He had a keen analytical mind, quick wit, and wry sense of humor. He had an incredible work ethic that led to a successful career in the manufacturing industry. He was a man of great devotion - to God, to family, to friends, and to his work.
Tom was the beloved husband of Ann Murray and dear father of Elizabeth (David Jr.) Carlson, Thomas, and Laura (Bradley Kotenko). He is survived by five brothers and sisters: Mary (Donald) Owens, Robert, William (Renee), Eileen (Steven) Hudock, and Peggy (David) Blue. He also leaves to mourn stepmother Carol Kasprowicz Murray and her children, Matt and Mary Beth, mother-in-law Nancy Cantner, brothers-in-law Brian (Julie) Quinn and Patrick (Sheila) Quinn along with many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents Thomas and Catherine Murray.
When Tom and Ann met in their 20s, Tom knew he had found the one. He won her heart and held her hand for more than 34 years. It was their love and the family they raised together that gave Tom purpose and saw him through his battle with ALS, a devastating disease that took away his speech, mobility and physical strength. When Tom's strength waned, Ann gave him hers. When he needed a lift - in spirit or physically - Tom's kids and family were there for him. Despite its devastation, Tom never let his illness define him. He embraced each day, welcomed visitors, cherished his time with family, and kept believing that each new day had something wonderful to offer. On his last day, Tom was tired, but he still looked forward to the possibility of celebrating the holidays with family. It was always a big thumbs up to any opportunity to celebrate.
In work and in life, Tom strove for excellence and led by example. Many who worked for Tom over the years have said that his counsel, his directives, and his high standards inspired them. Tom didn't see obstacles; he saw challenges to be overcome. Tom completed his bachelor's degree in Business Administration from Walsh College and earned an Executive MBA from Michigan State University.
Since 2009 Tom worked at AJM Packaging Corp., most recently serving as Vice President of Quality & Safety Compliance. Prior to that, Tom worked in the plastics industry for more than two decades, making lifelong friends and working alongside his brother, Bill.
A Visitation for Tom is planned for Monday, November 14th from 2-8 p.m. with prayer services at 7 p.m. at Verheyden Funeral Home, 43300 Garfield Rd, Clinton Twp, MI 48038. All are invited to attend. "What to say about Tom Murray... So many things. He is a mentor, yes still is. These life experiences live on and on even when a person goes to the next journey. Tom's friendship, wisdom, constant thinking will always live within me. His mind never stopped I could always see it in his eyes. His smile lit up a room while his words left long lasting impression all those he talked to. While there were long periods of time we did not talk or catch up due to career and family, I always considered him a friend. This includes his family. The Murray family has always treated me as a true friend. There could be no better saying about Tom "gone but not forgotten". Tom Murray left an impression on me and so many people. Until we meet again my friend. Condolences to all of the Murray family from Heather, I and our family. "
