MUSCATINE, Iowa - José E. 'Queno' Peña, 69, of Muscatine, passed away on Thursday, December 8, 2022, at Iowa City Rehab and Health Care Center.

A graveside service will be held at 2:30 p.m. on Wednesday, December 14, 2022, in St. Mary's Cemetery. The Reverend Chris Weber will officiate. The Ralph J. Wittich-Riley-Freers Funeral Home is assisting the family with arrangements. Online condolences may be made at www.wittichfuneralhome.com.

José was born on December 28, 1952, in Matamoros, Tamaulipas, Mexico, the son of Jeronimo G. and Eudelia Gongora Peña. He married Santa Hernandez in Muscatine. She preceded him in death.

José was a 'jack of all trades' handyman. He loved dancing and singing. José always had a smile on his face and was quite charming. He was the best joke teller in the world and always made everyone laugh.

He is survived by his one son, José Peña and his wife, Denise, of Tennessee; four daughters, Coral Tijerina, Cristina Peña, Veronica Rubio, and Viola Hernandez all of California; 16 grandchildren, Emma, Richard, Alexandra, Raul, Iris Marie, John Alex, Samantha Marie, David, Andrew, David, Elijah, Veronica, Martin, Matthew, Vanessa, and Jares; 11 great grandchildren, Jaycob, Natalie, Penelope, Julius, Scarlett, Serenity, Lourdes, Jaxson, Madylin Malissa, Luke Alexander, and Hannah Valentina; four siblings, E. Mario Peña and his wife, Diane, of Corona, California, L. Viola Peña of Muscatine, Lupita De La Paz of Muscatine, and Haydee Peña Rozell and her husband, Rick, of Iowa City; and many nieces and nephews.

José is preceded in death by his parents; and one sister, Imelda P. Luna; and his aunt, Lucinda Peña.
