Darlene Plain
February 10, 1934 - March 8, 2023

Darlene Plain, 89, passed away Wednesday, March 8, 2023, at Mary Greeley Medical Center in Ames.

A private celebration of Darlene's life will be at a later date. Darlene will be laid to rest with her husband and family at the Storm Lake Cemetery during a private family burial.

Darlene Sarah Plain was born in Lake City, Iowa on February 10, 1934, to Thomas and Clara (Bushman) Neagle. She grew up in Nemaha, Iowa where she received her education. Darlene had many fond memories and stories of growing up with her eight siblings in Nemaha. Following graduation, Darlene was united in marriage to Daryl Dwight Edward Plain on August 21, 1953; the couple raised their family in central and northwest Iowa while they were blessed with four children, Debra, Daryl "Buck", Darla and Dennis.

While caring and raising her family, Darlene worked as a silk screen operator at Electrolux, and did some house cleaning. Darlene liked playing bingo, cards, casino games and enjoying a good cup of coffee with her friends. Most of all, Darlene treasured time spent with her four children, and watching their families grow to a beautiful legacy of 12 grandchildren, 18 great-grandchildren, and one great-great-grandson who all held a special place in her heart.
Darlene will be deeply missed by her children, Debra West of Kamrar, Daryl "Buck" Plain of Webster City, Darla Heller of Story City, and Dennis (Brenda) Plain of Fort Dodge; 12 grandchildren, Darren, Dustin, Devin, Burke, Jerred, Chris, Nathan, Maisie, Sarah, Kari, Misty, and Nicole; 18 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandson. She is also survived by two sisters, Lu Mittelstadt and Mildred Morrow.

Darlene was preceded in death by her parents; husband of 53 years, Daryl who passed in 2007; son-in-law, Jeff West; and siblings, Melvin Neagle, Clara Ruth Patrick, Richard Neagle, Tommy Neagle, Mary Watts and Clayton Neagle.

Condolences and memories of Darlene may be shared with her family on her tribute page.

"Oh my sweet Momma, how I loved you. It is difficult knowing that everyday at 11am I will not be calling you as I have been for years. You gave me life, you gave me the strength, endurance which enables me to make some very difficult decisions. You showed me love, made me the person that I am today. You once said " Darla I was the hardest on you than the other kids because I knew you were capable of being so much and that you would do great things in your life" and Mom you were spot on. With your love and guidance I do make a difference in so many lives with Dementia. I will miss our talks ,our disagreements as most Moms and Daughters do but mostly Mom I will miss you, your voice, your touch, your kiss on my cheek and the kindness of your soul. Until we meet again Mom please send me messages letting me know that you are okay. I love you until then. "

"Darlene was such a sweetheart. She was my neighbor and I love sharing coffee with her on my patio. We would watch the birds and look at the flowers and just visit. I'm going to miss those times. Rest in peace Darlene and know that I cherish our friendship. Deepest sympathies to Darlene's family."

"Darlene was a wonderful, giving person. Her love extended to everyone. She never held back her feelings and would support you in any endeavor. She was a true ISU Cyclone fan and kidded with anyone who was an Iowa fan. She enjoyed watching ISU basketball especially. I will always remember how open her door was. She was a great neighbor and I will miss her so much. Vicki A. "
