JoAnn Gilbert, age 88, of Ames, Iowa passed away on March 24, 2023. A visitation will be held at 1:00pm on Wednesday, March 29, 2023. A Funeral Service will be immediately following, at 2:00pm. Services will be at Grandon Funeral and Cremation Care, 414 Lincoln Way, Ames, Iowa. Burial will follow at Ames Municipal Cemetery.
JoAnn was born April 18, 1934, in Los Angeles, California, the daughter of William Joseph and Johanna Victoria (Zastrow) Reynolds. She was the youngest of 9 children with two sisters and six brothers. She graduated from Washington High School in Los Angeles.
JoAnn met a sailor from Ames (Chuck Gilbert) while he was based in Long Beach, fell in love and were married 6 months later on September 11, 1954. They moved their family to Ames a few years later where Chuck joined his father in the family business, Gilbert's Service Garage. Chuck and JoAnn purchased the business and owned Gilbert's Service Garage until they retired in 1998. JoAnn worked for Iowa State University at the Towers Residence Hall and enjoyed her job and co-workers. She was an avid quilter creating quilts for every member of her family, including the pets. In her younger years, some of her passions included participating on a women's bowling league, as well as being on a women's golf team.
The couple loved traveling and spending winters in Arizona. She took joy in golf, reading, bingo, casinos, and socializing with friends. JoAnn was a member of the Elks Club and looked forward to their activities, especially dancing.
JoAnn is survived by her daughters, Vicki (David) Kepley, Sharon Jacobs, Donna (Stephen) Rivers, grandchildren, Amber, Jarred, Jonathan, and Ashlyn and 11 great grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her husband Chuck, her parents, brothers, and sisters.
