Michael "Mike" Hancock, 72, of Jewell, IA, passed away peacefully surrounded by his loving family on Saturday, April 15, 2023 at Israel Family Hospice in Ames, Iowa.

A Celebration of Mike's Life will be held on May 28, 2023 from 2 to 4 PM at the Greenwood Park Clare and Miles Mills Rose Garden (4800 Grand Avenue, Des Moines, IA 50312). Ames Monument & Cremation Center in Ames (515-233-3449) is caring for Mike and his family. Online condolences can be made at AmesMonument.com. Michael Edward Hancock was born on February 11, 1951 to Ralph and Margie (Tyler) Hancock in Des Moines, Iowa. Mike graduated from Urbandale High School in 1969. He retired from the United States Postal Service where he had worked as a clerk for 30 years.

Mike was an avid reader and enjoyed gardening, listening to music, and genealogy. He was a founding member of the Central Iowa Blues Society and was a self-taught guitar and harmonica player.

He is survived by his wife, Jean Schmidt of Jewell; son, Lucas (Lisa) Hancock of Berthoud, Colorado; daughter, Abigail Engelberth of West Lafayette, Indiana; grandsons, Logan, Sean, August and Felix; and sister, Sue Ellen (Roger) Burkman of Dexter, Iowa. He was preceded in death by his parents; his older brother and sister; and his first wife, Denise.
