In loving memory of

Devon A. Hoover
November 18, 1969 - April 23, 2023

Devon Alan Hoover, aged 53, passed away on Sunday, April 23, 2023. Devon was born to Clarence and Lauretta Hoover on November 18, 1969, in Elkhart, Indiana.
Devon was the fourth child of seven and the middle member of what the family affectionately called "the three little ones." He took initiative in this little group, planning their pretend games and determining the rules that governed their play. Games of Monopoly went on for days as he kept suggesting new rules to extend the game and helped negotiate bank loans for struggling players. His early life was not all play and included plenty of manual labor. Until he left for college, Devon worked on the family dairy farm--milking the cows, planting and harvesting crops, and doing many other chores alongside the rest of the family. One of his hobbies was tending his own small garden in the backyard, which he had filled with herbs and perennials. He also raised and sold potatoes during his teenage years.
As the only son, Devon could have taken over the family farm, but he decided early in life that he wanted to become a doctor. He graduated from Indiana University School of Medicine in 1996 and completed his residency at Henry Ford Hospital in Detroit. Throughout his career , he served his patients with exceptional skill and compassion. At the time of his death, he had been practicing for 27 years as a board-certified neurosurgeon specializing in the treatment of neck and back disorders. According to Ascension St. John Hospital, Dr. Hoover was recognized each year since 2008 "as one of Metro Detroit's most respected neurological surgeons in Hour Detroit magazine's annual 'Top Docs' rankings."
Devon loved his home in the Boston-Edison Historic District of Detroit, Michigan. Since he purchased the home in 2008, he had been steadily transforming it room by room with period décor and carefully selected antiques. He was essentially the curator of his own museum, which he loved sharing with friends, family, and visitors.
Devon had an eye for excellence across many areas of life, including his yard and hedges. He hired a landscape service for some of the outside maintenance, but the hedges were his specialty, and only he could meet his own standards. One of his friends jokingly threatened to burn down the hedges because Devon was declining too many social invitations, saying, "Oh, I can't come because I need to trim the hedges."
Devon loved flowers and gardening. Each week he went to Eastern Market and brought back bouquets to display in his home. Visitors always noticed the gorgeous fresh flower arrangement he kept in his entryway. He had recently installed a greenhouse in his backyard, designed as a replica of the one originally on the historic property. Devon always tended it himself and said that if he had another life, he would be a gardener.
Devon loved his city and gave generously to the community in many ways. He often hosted a picturesque Christmas party that became a bit of a tradition in his neighborhood. As a board member of the Detroit Opera, he encouraged rising opera stars by hosting intimate concerts at his home. He was planning to host a fundraiser for the Fraternite Notre Dame on May 4, but the event had to be canceled due to his untimely death.
Though Devon had many interests and demands on his time, his family and friends were always a priority. He rarely missed a Hoover family event and made the drive to Indiana frequently to visit his parents and sisters, often playing with his many nieces and nephews. He spent quality time with many friends and enjoyed traveling with them to unique places around the world.
Devon's mother, Lauretta Hoover, passed away four days after his death. Devon is survived by his father, Clarence Hoover, Goshen, IN, and by six sisters, Diana (Andrew) Wenger, Goshen, IN; Lila (Wendell) Graber, Sault Ste. Marie, ON, Canada; Linda (Lowell) Herschberger, Brooklyn, NY; Beth (Thad) Lechlitner, Middlebury, IN; Andrea (Jerald) Martin, Nappanee, IN; Laurie Hoover, Ephrata, PA; 22 nieces and nephews; and 8 great nieces and nephews.
Donations can be made in Devon's honor to the Fraternite Notre Dame (www.fraternitenotredame.org) or the Detroit Opera (www.detroitopera.org).
Devon was a gift from God, a beloved son, brother, uncle, and friend. He touched many lives with his kindness and generosity. We all will miss him greatly.

"I saw Dr. Hoover in his practice for a spine evaluation in January of this year. He was such a nice guy, explained my MRI s and thoroughly, provided me options and gave his honest opinion. He did not pressure me one bit to have the surgery. He also spent over 45 mins with me, answered all Of my questions, and I did not feel rushed at all. I felt like I could have kept talking. This not common as most specialists I have seen only give you 10-15 mins. I thanked him for taking the time to answer all of my questions. My dad actually saw him months before I did and said the same thing about him. My dad wanted to have surgery but he told him to try PT first. A truly nice guy. I am so sorry for your loss. "

I once showed him a picture of my son's Lemon Queen Sunflower, which grew 12 feet tall, with many sunflowers attached. He was so impressed that I got him a package of those seeds to plant in his own yard. He was not only my back surgeon, but I considered him a friend."

Michelle Whitford wrote on May 2, 2023:

"I was a resident at St. John?s from 2006-2009. I knew ?Hoover? was an Anabaptist last name, but it?s common outside of that world too, so I didn?t make the connection. He wouldn?t have made any connection with my last name either as my dad?s mom broke tradition and married a ?Whitford?, even though, as he put it, the Indians big wigs dropped his hand when he revealed he was from outside of the fold. She was a Slagel and her family were Amish before they moved to MI from southern IL. We rotated through neurosurgery and my turn came not too long after my house burned down at the end of second year in residency. It was a dark time for me. Devon asked the typical questions, including where I went to college. I responded, ?Goshen College?, which is how he and I finally made the connection. I looked up to him because of his kindness, compassion, love for his family, and common background. We?d both grown up in farming environments and ended up somewhere very different. He sits on a pedestal and always will, as an example of what kind of person and physician I wanted to become. How to hold onto some of that Mennoniteness in the midst of a very different world. I?d wandered through residency without anyone to share that Mennonite bond with, even if he and I were not actively involved in church. We told bad Mennonite jokes and talked about growing up in it. I also made him homemade pies often, after getting the thumbs up from both grandmas. He dared ask if the crust was homemade, as if! I sat next to he, his mom, and a couple of his sisters and big relief sale held at the Elkhart County Fairgrounds each year. It was the big event, the quilt auction, and I know he bought one every year. We browsed through the ones on display too. It was a rare day of feeling whole during training; I can be a little shy still, but it felt natural and familiar. I went almost every year in college and medical school to the relief sale. It was always a highlight of my year. He ate a few pieces of pie that day and we?d spent many OR cases discussing the baking prowess on display at that sale. It was amusing to the staff too. I went to IUSM as well. I always regretted losing touch with him when I left Detroit for CA. I came across his number still in whatever generation of cell phone I have now, the weekend he passed away. Wanted to reach out. He?s a precious light to the world, to his family gone way too soon. I grieve his passing even though I was just another resident passing through. My sadness cannot come close to his family?s loss. My tears flow with theirs and all the other people his life and kindness touched. "

"I was heartbroken to hear of Dr. Hoover?s passing. He was my doctor for my back surgery. Right before I was wheeled into surgery, as I was feeling vulnerable and anxious, he stood at the foot of my bed and said ?I really hope I can help you.? His sincerity and compassion in that moment really touched me. Every time I met him, I was impressed by his kindness and patience, and realized what a ?gem? of a doctor I had. I was truly blessed to have known him. Prayers for Dr. Hoover?s family and all who are hurting at this time. Our Heavenly Father invites us to pour our hearts out to him. He hears our prayers and loves us, longing to be our comfort at this difficult time. "

"Clarence, Diana, Lila, Linda, Beth, Andrea, and Laurie...I am just heartbroken at the loss you have experienced with Devon's passing and then also your wife/mother. Prayers go out to all of you, and your extended families, during these most difficult days. Mourning their passing, yet also Celebraing their life and the time you were blessed to share with them. So many wonderful memories of MY childhood involved time I spent with your family. Riding horses with Diana, Lila, Linda and Devon, playing in the grain wagons, and running in the cow lot and pasture on the farm. The last time I spoke with anyone in the family was actually at the visitation in Goshen for my own mother. Mom had moved from our family home next door "in the woods", to a home in town in Goshen many years prior to her death, and I have lived out of state since 1980. I can't tell you how much it meant to see and talk with Lauretta, after being out of the neighborhood for so many years. It was good to catch up a bit on how everyone was doing. She was so proud of all of you. You all were the best neighbors, and we were blessed to know you. I wanted so much to be at the service for Devon, to honor him, and support your family at this time. I am however, recovering from an illness and unable to make the trip. Please know I am with you all in thought, and I will be watching the live stream of the service. Praying you all find comfort in the celebration of his life. I don't think I have ever read so many touching comments as in the past several days from patients, colleagues, neighbors, and friends. A true testament to a wonderful man, and doctor...a life well lived...and a loss that is and will be felt by so many. Sue Miller Birchmeier "
