Lois Vohs
December 10, 1924 - June 21, 2023




Lois Marie Barghols Vohs passed away on June 21 at the age of 98, with family by her side. A Celebration of life will be held on July 24, 2023, at the Northcrest Grand Room 2310 Northcrest Pkwy, Ames, IA 50010, from 4:00 p.m. until 6:00 p.m. A private burial will be held.

She was the daughter of Ben and Hilda Barghols from Holstein, Iowa.

Lois taught in rural schools until 1946 when she married Robert Vohs, following his return from service in the Marine Corps overseas. After Bob's graduation from Iowa State in 1950, they lived in Ames for more than 70 years. In 2006, they moved to the Northcrest Retirement Community.

Lois was an active member of the First United Methodist Church in Ames. She was a member and former president of the P.E.O. Sisterhood and was interested in antiques and history. She served on the Ames Historical Society board, the Church History Committee and was a former member of a Quester chapter.

She enjoyed playing bridge, going to Iowa State ballgames, and entering into discussions about topics of the day. She loved family gatherings on birthdays and holidays. After Bob's retirement, they traveled throughout the United States and overseas and spent winter months in Arizona.

Bob preceded her in death in 2019. She is survived by son Richard (Sheri) Vohs in Urbandale, daughter Barbara (Marvin) Peterson in Huxley, grandchildren Laura McGarvey, Beth (Bryan) Phillips, Kaitrin Vohs and Margaret Vohs. Great grandchildren include Jack and Lucy McGarvey and Nevaeh, Jacob, Allie, and Caden Phillips.

Lois was an active supporter of the Ames Historical Museum at 416 Douglas Ave # 101, Ames, IA 50010. Her family asks that if you are so moved, you make a donation to this organization in her memory.
