JAMESBURG - WALTER RICHARD BUTCHER passed away on Wednesday, December 20, 2023, at Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital, New Brunswick. He was 77 years old.
Born in Jersey City, NJ to Walter and Carolyn (née Kane) Butcher, Richard was their third child. Richard was raised and attended school in East Brunswick, NJ.
Richard moved to Phoenix, Arizona where he married Ellen in 1975, and welcomed their first son, Jeffrey, in 1980. They relocated to Jamesburg, NJ in 1982 and welcomed second son, Eric, in 1986. Prior to retiring in 2011, Richard was a millwright for Hercules, Inc. in Parlin, NJ. In retirement, Richard was a crossing guard for Cranbury Township, where his grandsons attend school.
In his spare time, he enjoyed working on his classic Honda, going down the shore, and spending time with his family and grandchildren.
Richard is predeceased by his parents, Walter and Carolyn Butcher, stepmother Harriet (née Reidy), and sister Mary Ellen Gallo.
Surviving are his wife of 48 years, Ellen Marie (née Dumbreski) Butcher of Jamesburg; his two sons, Jeffrey Butcher and his wife, Sabrena, of Cranbury, and Eric Butcher and his wife, Allison, of Brooklyn, NY; his two grandsons, Luke and Henry; and siblings Carol Ann Kurek and her husband, Art; Michael and his wife Mary; Debbie Simanek; Lorraine Reimbold and her husband, Bruce; James Butcher and his wife, Lori; Gary Butcher and his wife, Linda; Jean Ann Urbanski and her husband, Michael.
Family and friends may visit on Wednesday, December 27, 2023, from 3:00 to 7:00 pm, at The Brunswick Memorial Home, 454 Cranbury Road, East Brunswick, where a service will be held at 4:00pm. Cremation will be private. For directions, please visit our "Services" page.
