James H. Young
October 3, 1930 - May 20, 2024



James Hughdean Young, 93, a long-time resident of Ames, Iowa, passed peacefully of heart failure on Monday, May 20, 2024, at the Israel Family Hospice House with family by his side.

James was born October 3, 1930, to William Roy and Mary Belle Bond Young in St. Charles, Iowa. He was a 1948 graduate of St. Charles High School and was president of his class. He was united in marriage to Mary Della Oleson in Des Moines, Iowa, June 19, 1950. They were blessed with four children; James E. "Gene" (Marjorie) Young of Cedar Rapids, Karen K. Schultz of Dyersville, William R. Young "Roy" (Deborah) of Ames and Peggy L. (Bradley) Mabuce of West Des Moines, Iowa.

James worked for Reed Brothers Grain Elevator, Truro, Iowa. He later worked in sales for Purina Feeds, Supersweet Feeds, Mutual of Omaha and Sears Roebuck. He has been self-employed for fifty plus years in Ames, Iowa. He was owner of The Keg Shop and co-owner of JARCO Stores, both in Ames. He also owned and managed rental properties in the area.

James enjoyed playing cribbage, fishing, reading and social time with friends at morning coffee. He also attended different music venues. He was a lifetime member of the Masonic Lodge St. Charles and obtained the 3rd degree recognition.

James is survived by his children Gene, Karen and Peggy, and several grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great-great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents; his son, William Roy Young; brother, Robert Milton Young; brother, Horace Mansel Young; and an infant brother and infant sister.

A visitation will be held Saturday, June 1, 2024 from 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 noon at Grandon Funeral and Cremation Care, 414 Lincoln Way, Ames, Iowa.

A graveside service will follow at St. Charles Cemetery, St. Charles, Iowa at 2:00 p.m.
