M. Jean Whitt, age 92 of White Lake, died peacefully Tuesday, July 9, 2024 at Evergreen Terrace in Antigo. She was born on March 13, 1932 in Gages Lake, IL a daughter of Carl and Iva (Lane) Quist, Sr. She married Oran Whitt on November 26, 1949 at St. Peter Lutheran Church, Polar. He preceded her in death on July 21, 2013.
In 1946 she came to the White Lake area from Illinois to visit her sister when she was 14 and it became her home for the rest of her life.
Mrs. Whitt attended Langlade County Teachers College in Antigo graduating June of 1962. She received a Bachelor of Science in Elementary Education from the University of Wisconsin - Stevens Point August of 1971. She taught for the White Lake School District for 35 years. Mrs. Whitt began her career in fifth grade, then spent 15 years as a K-12 Special Education instructor and finished her last 16 years as a first-grade teacher. Notably, she was appointed to a national committee for the study of and promotion of smaller rural school districts. Jean retired in June 1999.
She loved reading, collecting books, checking the weather, and spending time with family. After a trip to Sweden in 2005 she made strong connections with many of her Swedish relatives, the homeland of her father.
Survivors include four sons, Carl (Edwina) Whitt of Menomonee Falls, Jeff (Jane) Whitt of Stevens Point, Andy (Brenda) Whitt of Highland Village, Texas, and Joe (Carolyn) Whitt of Ponte Vedra, Florida; eight grandchildren, William (Joanie), Jodi (Jim), Lori (Brad), Mike (Jamie), Jennifer (Nick), Jeremiah (Mellisa), Katie (Seth) and Mitchell (Madelyn); and ten great-grandchildren, Tyler (Jordyn), Gunnar, Briannyn, Brodie, Isla, Sydney, Jay, Mackenzie, Inara and Barbara.
In addition to her husband and parents, she was preceded in death by five brothers, Lester, Carl Jr., Ed, Don and Richard; and six sisters, Loretta Amburgy, Anne Nehls, Emma Huffins, Geraldine Nielson, Alice Parmalee and Helen Pergakis.
A special thank you to the Staff of Evergreen Terrace for the wonderful care they gave while allowing "Jean to be Jean" and her niece Terry Zelechowski.
A funeral service will be held on Friday, July 19 at 12 p.m. at Bradley Funeral Home with Reverend Marvin Kindle officiating. Visitation will be on Friday from 10 a.m. to the time of service at the funeral home. Burial will take place immediately following the service at St. James Catholic Cemetery in White Lake.
Donations in her memory can be made to the White Lake Area Historical Society.
