In loving memory of

Boyd Dohrmann
June 11, 1944 - July 20, 2024

Boyd Dohrmann, age 80, of Ames, Iowa passed away July 20th, 2024. Boyd was born June 11th, 1944, in Hampton, Iowa to Ben and Fern (Hemm) Dohrmann. He graduated from Franklin Consolidated School in 1962. He attended Iowa State University, majoring in Animal Science, and was a member of Alpha Gamma Rho fraternity. While in college, he served in the National Guard for 6 years.

At Iowa State, Boyd met his future wife, Irene Williams. After graduation, Boyd and Irene went back to the family farm in Hampton, where he raised crops, sheep, cattle and hogs, and sold Cornelius Seed. While farming, the Dohrmann family received the Century Farm Award in 1988. After 45 years, he retired from farming and moved to Ames.

While growing up Boyd was deeply involved in 4-H and livestock judging from a young age. His passion continued at Iowa State, where he was a member of the Iowa State Livestock Judging Team. He co-founded The Dohrmann Brothers Sheep business with his brother Bill and showed Hampshire sheep at the Iowa State Fair for 50 consecutive years, as well as at various state fairs across the Midwest. Besides watching his children show sheep, the highlight was raising the 1999 National Grand Champion Hampshire Ram. He enjoyed judging sheep at numerous state, regional and county fairs. He served on the Iowa Sheep Board and Iowa Sheep Improvement Association. He was inducted into the Iowa 4-H Hall of Fame for his several years of service as a 4-H leader and the Franklin County youth sheep program.

Boyd was a member of the Ames UCC Church and proud supporter of Iowa State University. He was an avid sports fan, holding season tickets for football for 48 years and men's basketball for 40 years. He enjoyed traveling with his wife and family, visiting all 50 states, and he loved reading in his spare time.

Boyd is preceded in death by his parents, Ben and Fern Dohrmann and his granddaughter Makayla Roberts. He is survived by his wife Irene of 54 years; brother Bill; children Jill (Brian) Roberts, Ben (Jen) Dohrmann, and Sarah (Adam) Britton; grandchildren Cael Roberts, Makenna, Bennett and Kennedy Dohrmann, and Will and Everett Britton; nieces and nephews.

Visitation will be held at Grandon Funeral Home in Ames on Thursday, July 25, from 5:00-7:00 p.m. (414 Lincoln Way, Ames, Iowa 50010). A graveside service will be at the Hampton Cemetery on Friday, July 26 10:30 a.m. Everyone is welcome to attend a celebration of life lunch at 11:30 at the Coulter Community Center.

"I want to offer my sincere condolences to Irene and the entire family. Boyd and I were good friends in Franklin Community School, college and beyond. We had a common interest in sports, participatory and otherwise. For some reason we decided it would be a good idea to be co-student managers of the high school boys basketball team for a couple of years. We had a fun time in our social activities. In college we traded barbs about his Iowa State Cyclones and my University of Iowa Hawkeyes. Boyd was a fine person who will be missed by the many who knew him."

Along with his wife Irene, he has been a dedicated RSVP volunteer for more than 6 years, helping at MGMC and delivering countless meals to homebound seniors in Story County. Our entire staff send our deepest sympathies to Irene and the rest of the Boyd family. Kalen Petersen"
