In loving memory of

Maxine Hildebrand
October 9, 1918 - October 16, 2024

Maxine was born on October 9, 1918, to Alexander McKenzie and Olive Patti (Holmes) Grant, lovingly named after her father's nickname "Mac". She grew up in Onawa, Iowa. Her Great-Grandfather was one of the founding fathers and named the city. She pursued a BS in Business Administration from the University of Nebraska, graduating in 1941 and becoming a proud member of the Delta Gamma sorority. During her university years she met Howard Hadden Hildebrand, a medical student at the time, and their love story began. Despite receiving a job offer from J. Edgar Hoover to work at the FBI in Washington DC, Maxine chose to follow her heart and married Howard on June 21, 1942. The couple lived in Cleveland during Howard's medical internship before Maxine returned to Onawa during WWII with their first child. After a period in Buffalo, NY to complete Howard's residency in Pediatrics they settled in Ames to start Howard's medical practice in 1946. The couple raised four children, Patti, Michael, James and Steven.

Maxine was an active member of the Ames community, serving as a charter member of the PEO Chapter KC, a member of Collegiate Presbyterian Church, Questers Preservation - Ames, Mary Greeley Hospital Auxiliary and Daughters of the American Revolution. Maxine was honored with a 100 Year Family Farm Ownership certificate for the family's farm in Onawa.

Maxine loved traveling with Howard and later with her daughter Patti. She had many beloved friends in Ames and a renowned reputation playing bridge. She was an avid Iowa State fan spending many hours in the old Armory, Clyde Williams Field, Hilton Coliseum, and Jack Trice Stadium. She rarely missed football, men's basketball or women's basketball games on TV. She must have known all three were on the way to the simultaneous top 10 rankings.

She is survived by her daughter Patti (David) Spatcher; her daughter-in-law Carol Hildebrand and son Steven (Betsy) Hildebrand; grandchildren Christy (Clifton) Rutledge, Chris (Mis) Anderson, Dana Hildebrand, and Kate (Alex) Wilson; great-grandchildren Caitlyn (Daniel) Meyer, Chandler (Luke) Merritt, Carley (Tyler) Griffin, Seth Roig, and Miriam Roig; and most recently her great-great-granddaughters Penny Lou Meyer and Hazel Merritt.

She is preceded by her loving husband Howard; her parents; sons Michael H. Hildebrand and James R. Hildebrand; and grandson Wesley M. Hildebrand.

The family would like to extend their gratitude to the teams at Northcrest Community and Suncrest Hospice for their loving support and care.

There will be a gathering at Northcrest Community Center, 2300 Northcrest Pkwy, Ames, Iowa 50010, on Saturday, October 26, 2024 from 2:00-3:00 p.m., with family present to greet friends.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the James Hildebrand Women's Basketball Scholarship, Iowa State University Foundation, PO Box 2230, Ames, IA 50010-2230.
