John Patrick Carroll of Bellevue, WA, passed away peacefully at home on July 10, 2025, surrounded by his loving family.
He was a devoted husband, loving father, and loyal friend.
Raised in NYC, but a self-proclaimed citizen of the world, John was born February 22, 1934, in New York, NY, the only son of Irish immigrant parents.
A life-long sports fan, as a boy, John was an usher at Yankee Stadium. As a young man, he worked for the Associated Press, running photos from the field to the newsroom in the wee hours of the morning. It was during this time he had a brush with fame, bumping into Marilyn Monroe!
In January 1960, John married Lois Hynes and raised a daughter and a son. He took his family on many fun adventures all over the country, from the mountains of Virginia, to bike rides through Georgetown in DC, to numerous theme parks where some of us accompanied him on thrilling roller-coaster rides.
John's long career with the General Accounting Office - where it was said that, as a manager, he cared more about the people than the paycheck - took him and his family to Virginia/Washington DC, then to Seattle, then to Cincinnati, and ultimately back to Seattle. Wherever the family was settled, John always became a fan and supporter of the local sports teams and was among the first fans of new Seattle teams like the Mariners, Seahawks, and Kraken. While in Cincinnati, he discovered running. He completed many road races over the years.
A graduate of Iona College, John valued education and always was striving for the best at every endeavor. This led him to join the Toastmasters club and hone his public speaking skills. Many people say they will do this and that "when I get around to it." Toastmasters gave him a round "TUIT" coin so he no longer had any excuses. He retired early from a very successful career in government, but that did not stop him from working to help others and better his community. He volunteered to help seniors with their taxes, took part in a decades-long NIH study to further diabetes research, and worked as a Peer Counselor at Highline Hospital in Burien, WA.
Predeceased by his dear wife of 48 years, Lois, John spent the last 11 years of his life at the Solista retirement community where he had many friends including his long-time companion, Kathy Heath. John and Kathy enjoyed traveling and took many fun and interesting trips over the years.
John's kindness, compassion, generosity, humor, and friendly smile will be missed by everyone who ever knew him, forever.
John is survived by his daughter, Kathleen "Kat" (Kevin) Wruck, and son, James "Jim" (Pat) Carroll, and long-time companion, Kathy Heath.
Funeral mass to be held Friday, August 8th, at 11:00 a.m. at St. Madeleine Sophie Catholic Church in Bellevue, WA. Reception to follow.
