Alberta Swank was born on October 2, 1928, in Oskaloosa, Iowa. Bert grew up in Otley, Iowa, and moved back to Oskaloosa when she finished school, and worked in an ice cream parlor.

She met her future husband, John, during a "broom" skate, at a local roller skating rink, where she spent many happy hours. Bert and John married in June of 1947. She spent several years as an Army wife, living in multiple states, as well as the Philippines, and Taiwan. She loved the life of an officer's wife, and learned to play bridge from fellow officer's wives, which she played for the rest of her life, becoming an excellent and enthusiastic player.

After settling in Ames following their time in the military, she belonged to a few regular bridge groups that shared meals and friendship for many years. She also dedicated time to her community as a long time volunteer with Meals on Wheels. Bert worked at JCPenney's for several years, first in men's clothing, then in the fine jewelry department, which she loved.

Bert was a strong, capable woman who was unafraid to speak her mind. She cared deeply for her family, and was always available for her kids and grandkids. Bert was a Cub Scout leader, and a Camp Fire Girls leader. She was very creative, making candles, wreaths, cards, and pressing flowers in her spare time. She will be greatly missed.

She is survived by her children Dennis (Sally), Marta Anderson (Dan), and Paula Chapman (Doug), seven grandchildren, and eleven great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, John, her parents, Johnnie and Nellie Swank, her brothers, Lloyd, Will, and Jim, and her sister, Dena Proehl.

The burial will be at Ames Municipal Cemetery at 10:30 on Saturday, December 6th, followed by a reception at The Parlor, 119 Washington, Ames, Iowa, 50010, from 11:00 AM - 1:00 PM.

In lieu of flowers, please send donations to St. Jude's Children's Hospital.
