Harry R. Cunningham

Harry Richard Cunningham, son of George P. and Laura Grace (Tower)Cunningham, was born on September 12, 1915, at his parents home in
Shenandoah, Iowa. He entered into eternal rest on Tuesday, December 9, 2008, at the Shenandoah Medical Center at the age of 93.

Most all of Harry's life was spent in Shenandoah. He grew up in the 9th Ave area and attended the Shenandoah Schools, graduating from Shenandoah High School with the Class of 1934. Following high school, Harry worked with his father as a plumber. At the age of 27, He
enlisted in the Army during World War II. He spent 43 months overseas with the Army as a foreman on the loading docks at Port Omaha and in
Sicily, Italy before receiving his honorable discharge.

Harry was married to Marguerite Gwendolyn Saxton until her untimely death in 1963. Following his return from the war he again worked as a master plumber until taking a new job with the U. S. Postal Service in 1952 as a letter carrier in Shenandoah. He worked as a letter carrier until retiring after 20 years in 1972. Following his "retirement" he worked as a plumber, gas station attendant and worked
other assorted jobs to keep himself busy. On May 12, 1967, Harry was united in marriage to Shirley Marlene Ryan, in Nebraska City,
Nebraska. In his spare time, Harry enjoyed hunting, fishing and gardening. Most of all, he loved spending time with his children and grandchildren, as family meant everything to him.

Preceding Harry in death were his parents; wife, Marguerite Gwendolyn Cunningham; daughter, Jodi Matheny; and son-in-law, Donny Fletcher.

Survivors include his wife, Shirley Cunningham of Shenandoah; eleven sons and daughters, Kent Cunningham and his wife Donna of Coin, Iowa,
Barb Nelson of Shenandoah, Jim Cunningham and his wife Karen of Farragut, Iowa, Marlene Fletcher of Shenandoah, LaDonna Cheeves of
Nashville, Tennessee, Linda Hullman and her husband Bruce of Shenandoah, David Ballain and his wife Sueann of Colorado Springs, Colorado, Bryan Cunningham and Wally Cunningham both of Shenandoah and Caryn Cunningham of Council Bluffs, Iowa; 24 grandchildren; 11 great grandchildren; son-in-law, Duane Matheny of Clarinda, Iowa; other relatives and many friends.

Graveside Services were held at 1:00 p.m. on Friday, December 12, 2008 at the Rose Hill Cemetery with Rev. Gary Fuller officiating. Servicing as casket bearers were Travis Kiesel, Michael Fletcher,Summer Fletcher, Keith Nelson, Cole Hullman and Danielle Matheny. Honorary casket bearers were Dale Preston, Glen Sheirbon,
Gary Geer, Ray Petty, Duane Lorimor and Morise Wynn. Military Rites were conducted by the Shenandoah American Legion Post #88.
