Harry Porter
December 12, 1913 - February 21, 2009

Harry E. Porter, P.E., age 95, died Saturday Feb. 21, at Bickford Cottage in Ames. A memorial service will be 4:00 PM Thursday, Feb. 26, in Helser Chapel in Collegiate Presbyterian Church, 159 N. Sheldon Ave. in Ames. Graveside services will be 11:00 AM Friday, Feb. 27, at Sidney Cemetery in Sidney, Iowa.
Harry Ellis Porter was born December 12, 1913, in Sidney, Iowa the son of Harry Clark and Ethel Bessie (Campbell) Porter. He graduated from Sidney High School and received his degree in engineering from International Correspondence School. Harry married Mary Olive Stafford on January 2, 1938, in Lincoln NE. Harry was a veteran of WWII, as a Navy Chief Mate assigned to the Marines as a Marine Boot Camp Training Officer. Harry was employed 33 years with Iowa State Highway Commission later known as Iowa Department of Transportation. He later retired after eight years as Cass County Engineer in Atlantic, Iowa. Harry was a Registered Civil, Highway and County Engineer, and a Registered Land Surveyor. He and his wife Mary lived in Hamburg and Atlantic, Iowa, and Ridgeway, Missouri, and retired to Elmcrest Retirement Community in Harlan, Iowa. The two of them enjoyed several winters at Leisure World in Mesa, AZ. They moved to Ames in 2006.
Harry is survived by his wife Mary of 71 years of Ames, son and daughter-in-law, Max and Monica Porter of Ames, and one grandson Nathan Porter of Fort Dodge, Iowa, along with several nephews and nieces.
Harry was preceded in death by his parents, brothers, Russell, James and Keith Porter, sisters, Bessie Graham, Mabel Laird, Harriet Pierce, Inez Silence, and Ruby Bevington.
Memorials may be directed to Youth and Shelter Services of Ames.
