Dr. Charles Samuels age 78, a long time Ames resident died Friday Oct. 17th at Israel Family Hospice House. A visitation will be 3:00 -- 8:00 PM Tuesday, Oct 21, with the family present 6:00 - 8:00 PM at Grandon Funeral and Cremation Care 414 Lincoln Way. A funeral service will be 2:00PM Wednesday, Oct 22, at Grandon Funeral and Cremation Care with a 2:00 PM Inurnment Thursday Oct 23, at Ames Municipal Cemetery, Ames, Iowa
Charles was born April 20, 1930 in Winston Salem, North Carolina the son of Ernest and Beatrice(Lee) Samuels. He graduated from Atkins High School in 1948, Charles then graduated from Johnson C. Smith College in Charlotte, NC, and later received his Masters from West Virginia University in Morgantown. He received his PHD from Iowa State University. in Higher Education Administration .
In 1952 Charles enlisted in the US Navy. He married Joyce Brown on September 7, 1956 in Denver, CO. the couple then moved to Columbus, OH, Charles was a representative and research specialist on federal OEO programs in Ohio; He also served with department of probation. He then moved to Morgantown West Virginia where he was resource administrator for the Board of Regents. Charles was names the First Affirmative Action Officer at Iowa State University in 1973, where he continued until his retirement in 1992. Charles was involved or a member of Alpha Kappa Mu, Phi Kappa Alpha and Pi Sigma Alpha honor societies, National University Extension Assn. National Title I steering committee. And Omega PSI PHI Mutheta Chapter, Ames Noon Rotary club Past President, Ames Planning and Zoning Committee, President of United Way 1976, Board of Directors Ames Boys and Girls Club, State of Iowa Affirmative Action Task Force,
Survivors include his wife, Joyce of Ames, Daughter, Anisha Samuels of Ames, and Son and daughter in law Daryl and Gemaine Samuels of Houston, TX, Granddaughter, Diandra Holmes of Des Moines, and Great Granddaughter, Kasi Holmes of Des Moines, Brother Ernest Samuels of Columbus, OH.
Charles was preceded in death by his parents and a son Gregory Samuels.
