William Paul Wilson, one of three sons of William Daniel and Ruth Pauline (Bartles) Wilson, was born on January 19, 1938 at Pacific Junction, IA. Paul graduated from Glenwood High School in 1956 and went to work for the Omaha Standard truck body in Council Bluffs, IA where he received on-the-job training as a welder. On April 6, 1958, Paul and Phyllis Darlene Kruse were married at the United Methodist Church in Silver City, Iowa. They made their first home on a farm southwest of Silver City. They eventually moved and lived in Phyllis's grandparent's home in Silver City until 1965 when they built their present home. During these years, Paul worked at the Swift Packing Plant in Glenwood, was a parts-man for Dale Harper, and for 26 years worked as a welder in the Maintenance Department at the Glenwood State Hospital School. Paul and Phyllis were blessed with four children, Ben, Kristy, Amy, and Diana.
Paul was baptized at the Silver City United Methodist Church where he became an active member. He served on various church committees and was a trustee at the time of his death. Paul did lots of volunteer work for the church including growing the sweet corn for the annual church dinner. He was an avid sportsman who enjoyed hunting and fishing and trap-shooting. He had served as a safety instructor for the National Rifle Association and was president of the Southwest Iowa Sportman's Club. Winston, Paul's Chesapeake Bay retriever was his constant companion.
Paul and Phyllis had been married nearly 45 years when Paul died at Jennie Edmundson Hospital in Council Bluffs, Iowa on March 16, 2003. He had attained the age of 65 years, 1 month, and 27 days. Paul was preceded in death by his father, his brother Ben Wilson, and his daughter Kristy Stoppel who died as a result of a car accident on December 8, 2000.
Paul is survived by his wife Phyllis of Glenwood, his son Ben Wilson and his wife Lynn of Kansas City, MO and their sons Shayne Wilson of Overland Park, KS and Kenny Wilson of Kansas City; daughters Amy Harr and her husband Chris and their children Amanda Crocker, Megan Crocker, Dyland Crocker, Megan Harr, Joe Harr, and Ryan Harr all of Omaha, NE; Diana Carberry and her husband Greg of Papillion, NE and their daughters Isabelle and Ava; son-in-law Greg Stoppel and his children Clifford Stoppel and Paula Stoppel of Mineola, Iowa; his mother Pauline Wilson of rural Glenwood; brother Bruce Wilson and his wife Jackie of Glenwood; nieces and nephews; other relatives and friends.
