Bonnie Eloise Lewis Steiner, the youngest of four children of Arthur Clarence "A.C." and Mary Jane "Marie" (Coons) Lewis, was born on the family farm in Macedonia Township in Pottawattamie County, Iowa on April 2, 1918. Marie died in 1921 when Eloise was only 3. Several years later, A.C. married Cora Elizabeth Tyler of Carson. Eloise was a member of the Macedonia Methodist Church and graduated from Macedonia High School in 1935. On June 1st of that same year, Eloise and Gordon Thomas Steiner were married at North Platte, Nebraska. They established their first home on the Thomas Russell Stewart farm east of Henderson, Iowa. In 1942, Eloise and Gordon purchased a farm two miles west of Henderson. Their marriage was blessed with six children: Kay, Stephen, Lewis, Susan, Mary Jane, and Phillip. Having grown up without a mother of her own, Eloise was devoted to establishing a loving and nurturing home for her children. Eloise joined the Henderson Methodist Church and became active in every aspect of life in the community. She was a charter member of the Nishna Valley Federated Women's Club and volunteered wherever she was needed. In recent years, she enjoyed the sisterhood of her P.E.O. chapter. Eloise had a life-long love of music. Throughout her life, she shared her vocal talents to help celebrate anniversaries, weddings and community events. Her music also helped ease the sorrow at many funerals.
Eloise and Gordon had been married for 58 years when Gordon died on February 2, 1995. She continued to live in their farm home until moving to Carson, Iowa on December 22, 1999. She enjoyed her new neighbors and attended the Carson United Methodist Church. She moved to Lincoln, Nebraska on November 5, 2003 to live closer to her daughter Susan. Eloise died on February 13, 2004 at The Monarch, a hospice house in Lincoln, at the age of 85 years, 10 months, and 11 days.
