Mary Margaret Hyde, one of two children of William Judson Gann and Della (Place) Gann, was born April 1, 1917 at Gallatin, Missouri. Mary attended the Gallatin High School where she graduated as class valedictorian in 1935. An accomplished high school athlete, Mary was pitcher on the State Champion Gallatin High School softball team and was a State Champion doubles tennis player. She enrolled at Lindenwood College in St. Charles, Missouri and then entered Iowa State University at Ames, Iowa. She graduated with a Bachelor of Science Degree in textiles and clothing from Iowa State in 1939.
While a student at Iowa State, Mary met Richard Allen "Dick" Hyde of Hastings, Iowa. Mary and Dick were married September 10, 1939. Their first home was at Eldora, Iowa where Dick worked for the Iowa State Extension Service. Later Dick took a job with General Mills in Winona, Minnesota. In 1940, they moved to the family farm near Hastings, Iowa where they joined Dick's parents in operating the family farm. Their marriage was blessed with a son, Richard W. "Bill" Hyde. Mary enjoyed her role as a homemaker and farm wife. She was a member of the First Baptist Church in Malvern where she served as Sunday School teacher for many years. While Bill was in high school, Mary was in charge of the marching band uniforms making alterations as needed. She was a member of the Order of Eastern Star, Malvern Garden Club, Love Thy Neighbor club, and later joined the Malvern United Methodist Church. Mary enjoyed reading, gardening, and watching birds.
Mary and Dick had been married 40 years at the time of Dick's death on July 8, 1980. Mary continued to live on the family farm and became active in local bridge clubs.
Mary died at the Montgomery County Memorial Hospital on April 18, 2005 at the age of 88 years and 17 days. In addition to her husband Dick, Mary was preceded in death by her parents and sister-in-law Beatrice Gann. She is survived by her son Bill Hyde and his wife Kay (Beals) of Hastings; grandson Joe Hyde of Malvern and granddaughter Jennifer Vornbrock and her husband Joey of Omaha; brother James Gann and his wife Marilyn of Sierra Vista, AZ; a niece and two nephews; other relatives and friends.
