Gwendolyn Hendrix

Gwendolyn Mae Hendrix, one of two children of Orlow George Ryan and Jennie Mae (Bingham) Ryan, was born on December 27, 1919 at Ponca City, Oklahoma. Her parents moved to Southwest Iowa, eventually settling in Henderson, where Gwen received her basic education. She later earned her general education diploma.

Gwen and Kelly Seymour Hendrix were married in Papillion, Nebraska on December 14, 1935. They made their first home in an apartment above a gas station in Henderson, Iowa where Seymour ran the gas station and Gwen ran the restaurant. Seymour later farmed and established a farm implement dealership and operated Hendrix Implement for 36 years.

Gwen and Seymour's marriage was blessed with five children, Betty Joan, Barbara Lee, Allen Ray, Denise Anne, and Kellie Lynne. Gwen enjoyed her family and her role as mother and homemaker. Cooking, gardening, crocheting and working crossword puzzles were some of her enjoyments. Gwen was a great cook. She and Seymour were active in the Henderson community where Gwen was a member of the Federated Women's Club and Seymour served on the city council and was mayor. They were members of the Henderson Christian Church and Gwen a member of the Christian Women. Both enjoyed traveling and their time with the Rambling Rose Camping Club.

Gwen and Seymour had been married 51 years when he died of a sudden heart attack on June 9, 1987. Gwen continued to live in Henderson and remain active in the church and community. Her family and grandchildren continued to give her much joy.

Gwen died at Mercy Hospital in Council Bluffs, Iowa on August 28, 2006 at the age of 86 years, 8 months, and 1 day. She was preceded in death by her parents, Orlow and Jennie Ryan and her husband Seymour Hendix.

Gwen is survived by her children, Betty Jefferis and husband John of Shenandoah, Iowa, Barb Walker and husband Lanny of Council Bluffs, Allen Hendrix and wife Rebecca of Treynor, Iowa, Denise Sasse and husband Dennis of Griswold, Iowa, and Kellie Hendrix of Henderson, Iowa; eleven grandchildren; twelve great grandchildren and two great-great granddaughters; brother William Lester "Red" Ryan and his wife LoLetta of Glendora, California.
