On November 7, 1941, Don and Alice Sarah Pendegraft were married in Rock Port, Missouri. They made their home in Henderson where Don began working as a hired man. Over the next several years, they were blessed with three daughters: Sandra, Sherry, and Susan. Don farmed for himself from 1944 to 1956. He then worked as a mechanic at Andy's Auto Shop in Omaha. He taught and called square dancing all over southwest Iowa and was the caller at the National Teachers' Square Dance Convention in Omaha. In 1958 the family moved to Macedonia, Iowa where they opened Don's Repair Shop.

He enjoyed collecting miniature cars, camping, fishing, rodeos and woodworking. One of his pet projects was making wooden Christmas ornaments for children visiting Santa's Village. He was an inventor all of his life.
In 1972 Don involuntarily retired. He designed and built two homes and was known by his family as "Mr. Fix It" and "the Master Story Teller." He loved spending time with his family.

"To Sandy, her sisters and her mother: I was very saddened to hear of the passing of your beloved father/husband. I had the pleasure of meeting him just one time, but even in those brief moments, his genuiness and gentleness came through. I thoroughly enjoyed the trip through his workshop, where he demonstrated many of his "gadgets" for me, excitement dancing in his eyes. May he rest in peace and may God comfort you all at this difficult time. With sympathy and friendship--Joan "

"Hi Susie and to each of your family members. This past week I was thinking of your mom and dad and wondered how they were doing and what was going on in their lives. I am so sad to hear about your dad and hope your mom will in time find comfort. Am thinking of you all. I know no other more genuinely loving family who fill voids in lives as you have all done so many times. The laughter, comfort and joy you share with friends will always be cherished.
