Stephen Julius Speck, one of three children of Ezra Frederick Speck and Eva Wilhelmina (Kiersch) Speck, was born at his parent's farm home near Mineola, Iowa on September 10, 1939. Stephen grew up on the farm with his sister Mary Margaret and brother Paul. He attended the Vogeler School and the Silver City High School where he graduated in 1958.
Following school, Stephen began his lifelong farming career. He worked with his mother on the farm and in 1961 his brother Paul joined the farming operation. Stephen was an active member of St. John Lutheran Church where he served for a short time on the church council and rang the bell every Sunday morning. He loved his garden and was a very social person who enjoyed long visits with family and friends. Stephen enjoyed giving of himself. He was a member of the Mineola Volunteer Fire Department and had a genuine concern for others, always checking in on friends. His nieces and nephews were very important in his life and he loved the time he spent with them.
Stephen died at the Glen Haven Home in Glenwood, Iowa on March 31, 2007 at the age of 67 years, 6 months, and 21 days. He was preceded in death by his parents, nephew Bruce Heinrichs, and niece Jennifer Speck.
Stephen is survived by his sister Mary Margaret Heinrichs and her husband Arnold of Bruning, NE; brother Paul Speck and his wife Leslie of Mineola; nieces and nephews Brian Speck of Mineola, Cheryl Walsh and her husband Richard of Hebron, NE, Erick Speck of Red Oak, IA, Gretchen Jopp and her husband Ivan of Malvern, IA, and Trudy Beery and her husband Donovan of Omaha, NE; eight great nieces and nephews; a great great niece and nephew; and many friends.
