Velma Lillian Johnson, one of eight children of James Robert and Lula May (Rash) Taylor, was born September 9, 1924 at Coburg, Iowa. She grew up in the Macedonia, Iowa area and attended the Macedonia schools.
Velma married Vernon Leroy Johnson on January 17, 1941 in Council Bluffs, Iowa. They made their home in the Macedonia area and their marriage was blessed with two children, Verna Louise and Francis Lavern. Vernon worked for the Pottawattamie County Roads Department and Velma enjoyed her role as a housewife and mother. She loved flowers, gardening and canning of fruits and vegetables. There were always lots of potatoes stored in the cellar for the winter. Velma belonged to the Order of Eastern Star when Vernon was active in the Macedonia Masonic Lodge. She later worked at the Post Office in Macedonia for eight years.
In 1991, Velma and Vernon moved to Glenwood, Iowa where they became members of the Grace United Methodist Church and members of the Retired Senior Volunteer Program. Velma was also a member of the United Methodist Women and a Foster Grandparent. Through the years she enjoyed crocheting, knitting, embroidery work, making Christmas ornaments, walking, and volunteer work.
Velma and Vernon had been married 66 years at the time of her death on May 20, 2007 at the Jennie Edmundson Hospital in Council Bluffs, Iowa. She had attained the age of 82 years, 8 months, and 11 days.
Velma was preceded in death by her parents and grandson Mark Allen Kelley; brothers Gomer Vinton Taylor and his wife Mary Taylor, and Homer "Curt" Taylor; sisters Oneta Riggs and her husband Gilbert and Lauretta Dyer and her husband Jim; brothers-in-law Roy Price and George Price.
She is survived by her husband Vernon Johnson and daughter Verna Kelley and husband Robert, all of Glenwood; son Frank Johnson and wife Margaret of Springdale, AR; sisters Vera Price and Wilda Price both of Rogers, AR, Erma Taylor of Ann Arbor, MI; sister-in-law Lucille Taylor of Henderson, IA; eight grandchildren and 16 great grandchildren.
Memorials suggested to Grace United Methodist Church in Glenwood; Glewnood Fire Rescue; Macedonia Amercan Legion.
