Bernard John Roberson, son of Elizabeth "Bettie" Fannie (Wilson) and John C. Roberson, was born on October 11, 1939 at rural Macedonia, Iowa. He grew up in Macedonia and attended Macedonia High School. Following high school, Bernie took a job with a local gravel quarry.
On May 30, 1958, Bernie married Karen Marie Schoening at Malvern, Iowa. They established their home in Council Bluffs, Iowa and their marriage was blessed with children, Lorre Sue, Monte Lee, and Julie Ann. The family moved to Winterset, Iowa and Bernie continued to work for the quarry. Eventually, they returned to Council Bluffs where Julie Ann was born and Bernie took a job with the Interstate Machine Company in Omaha, Nebraska. Later the family moved to Macedonia, Iowa where Bernie accepted a job operating a bulldozer for Max Henderson. He purchased the fence building business from Earl Clymer and took a job working for the Pottawattamie County Road Department. Bernie later worked for Rieken Construction of Henderson, Iowa as an equipment operator. He completed his working career as a parts man for Nebraska Equipment in Omaha and retired in March 2002.
Bernie enjoyed hunting, fishing, gardening, working on 4-wheelers with his grandchildren, and listening to polka music on Sundays in his garage. Time spent with his children and grandchildren was Bernie's enjoyment. Bernie and Karen had been blessed with 50 years of marriage when Bernie passed away at the University of Nebraska Medical Center on June 3, 2008 at the age of 68 years, 7 months and 22 days. He was preceded in death by his parents; sisters, Donna Roberson and Theresa Curtis; and son Monte Roberson.
Bernie is survived by his wife Karen Roberson of Macedonia; daughters Lorre Turner and husband Terry of Macedonia and Julie Kates and husband Lonnie of Carson, IA; daughter-in-law JoHelen Roberson of Macedonia; siblings DyAnna Brown and husband Johnnie of Aurora, NE, Jessie McKinney of SC, Nadine Boeger and husband Kenneth of Red Oak, IA, Willard Roberson and wife Doris of Kansas City, MO, Kathryn Gibler of Macedonia, Leonard Roberson of Coshocton, OH, Maynard Roberson of Henderson, IA and Edward Slocum and wife Emily of Sumter, SC; eight grandchildren and six great grandchildren; nieces and nephews; other relatives and friends.
A memorial fund has been established.
