Gary Louis Peterson, the oldest of four children of Elsie Irene (McIntosh) Peterson and Vernon Richard Peterson, was born in Council Bluffs, Iowa on November 23, 1939. Gary grew up in Council Bluffs and attended Abraham Lincoln High School. On June 1, 1959, he enlisted in the U.S. Air Force and served overseas in Viet Nam until his discharge on May 31, 1963. Gary returned home and he and Jane Ferryman were united in marriage. They made their home in Council Bluffs and were blessed with their daughter, Jana Michelle. The couple later divorced and Gary continuing working as an over-the-road truck driver.
Gary met Bonnie Elaine Anderson and on January 26, 1969, they made their home in Council Bluffs along with Bonnie's children, Calvin, Susan, Bonnie, Thomas, Darla and Julie. Gary and Bonnie were also blessed with their four children, Gary Richard, William Lawrence, and twins, Jennifer Mae and Gregory Louis. In 1971, the family moved to Carson, Iowa and Gary continuing driving a truck. In 1976, the family moved to southwest Iowa where Gary began farming for area farmers in Fremont and Mills County and eventually working for Hay's Farms at Malvern, Iowa. In 1992, they moved to the Malvern area and Gary worked for Darling International in Omaha. After his retirement, Gary drove the Southwest Iowa Transit bus.
Gary was a member of the Glenwood American Legion, and some of his enjoyments included fishing, reading, playing cards, especially cribbage and pitch, and going to the casinos.
Gary passed away at the Jennie Edmundson Hospital in Council Bluffs on October 17, 2008, at the age of 68 years, 10 months, and 24 days. He was preceded in death by his parents, daughter Susan Marshall, and brother Richard "Dick" Brown.
He is survived by his wife, Bonnie Peterson of Malvern; children, Gary Peterson and wife Julie of Springfield, NE; William Peterson of LaVista, NE; Jennifer Peterson of Carson, IA; Gregory Peterson and companion Susan Darnold of Glenwood, IA; Calvin McIntosh and companion Teresa Elliot of Randolph, IA; Bonnie Lamm and companion Richard Woods of Malvern; Thomas Lebishak and wife Heather of Randolph; Darla Ledbetter and husband Paul and Julie Hester and husband Walter all of Amory, Mississippi; Jana Bryant and companion Butch Harshenberger of Council Bluffs; son-in-law Al Marshall of Randolph; sister Nancy Rounds and husband Russell and brother Larry Brown, all of Council Bluffs; 30 grandchildren and 24 great grandchildren; nieces and nephews; other relatives and friends.
A memorial fund has been established.
